Sony Bravia 52W5500 No HDMI input whatsoever, everything else works

    Hi All,

I have a problem with my my Sony Bravia 52W5500 tv. A few weeks ago all of the HDMI inputs stopped working. I'm guessing it might be a power surge, but i really don't know. I have tried the following:

    - Changed HDMI cables
    - Tried to send HDMI with different devices
    - Done the factory reset a dozen times
    - Went to diagnostic mode and everything was fine
    - Tested all other inputs, all work fine (basically everything except the HDMI is working correctly)
    - No leds are blinking (tv is behaving as usual)

I have opened the tv now and inspected the boards. I cannot see anything visually wrong (for example burnt) and all the little tiny fuses measure fine.

Could someone direct me in the right direction? I have no idea how to continue.

I'm a fairly skilled with the soldering iron so I would like to fix this as much as possible vs. just replacing a board.

    Thank you already in advance!

    Hdmi ic may need replacing.

Ok, good idea. Any other things to check before changing the IC?

Check all voltage regs for proper output, maybe you're not getting 5v to the ports ? Or if there's a separate switcher it may have failed or of course the main ic may have failed in some way. No easy check here as far as I know unless maybe you can scope those lines.

Will measure the voltage regs. Thanks for the suggestion. I also noticed that the TV recognizes that a HDMI cable is plugged in. Does this info help? By this I mean, I see that for example HDMI2 is plugged in when cycling through sources(when a cable is indeed plugged in to the HDMI2) Same goes for all the inputs.

That's an interesting fault. I'm not savvy enoigh on hdmi protocol to say what has failed here (could be data lines, port poweretc). Maybe reading up a little on the hdmi spec will give you some further insight.

Dunno if there is a discreet xtal for the data lines but I suppose that is another option.

Ok.. Measured directly from the HDMI-ports, and indeed they are getting voltage. 6.3VDC to be exact. Could the 1.3 "overvoltage" be the cause, or is it regular for the port to give over 5VDC?

On PS3's when no display but it is recognized it is the HDMI IC that has failed and swapping the IC sorts it. Should be the same with TV's inputs I suppose

Starting to seem like the IC, yes... Well I suppose I have to change it, if no other suggestions arise? I feel like i have tested everything that could be related to the problem.
