    Sony MDP-33 Laserdisc Player

Opened it up to see why the laser assembly was not parking right (there's a switch going iffy somewhere and it just makes an awful racket). Player otherwise worked fine.

    Wasn't expecting this at all.

    Wowza!
Not the problem I came in to fix, but a problem regardless.

Wait, so is the stain on the case all from the electrolyte of the cap? Or did someone spill something, causing over-voltage of the PSU, thus making the cap bulge and leak?

It's all leakage from that one cap. All the damage circles around that cap on both sides of the board, and on the bottom plate as it dripped down.
      I've never seen that before.

(Just saw this thread for the first time)

It's possible they are faulty from the manufacturer. Like the nichicon PF and PL series. I've seen them leak first-hand. Must be a faulty seal design or something to that effect. They smell like vinegar.

Note, there is this thread from quite a while ago:

Sony DVD player stuck tray (DVP-SR310P)
          by bogosort

          Hello,

I have a Sony DVD player with a stuck tray. It seems that moving or pressing on the tray makes it work.

          Anyone knows why?

          Thank you....

Sony CFS-5000S radio cassette player no FM reception
          by mikey5791
          Hi forum members,

In the past i have had many helpful hints from generous forum members in diagnosing and solving issue related to most of my electrical things.

Fyi, i have been keeping this unit of Sony radio cassette player as the cassette belting has worn off but the radio has been working fine before. Recently, out of a sudden i found out i can't get any radio reception at all (no signal from FM,MW or SW band) except some buzzing warp noise from the speakers.

I opened the casing inside and checked for any dry solder, burned component or loose wires...

          Sony KDL-46HX850 Can't upgrade/update firmware
          by dkneyle
Diagnosed this TV as having a failed main board which I've replaced with one from a KDL 55HX850. They are (supposedly) the same board.

Being 'Smart TV' it requires a firmware reboot when you swap out boards such as T-Con or main board. It starts with a black screen and flashing yellow and green LEDS, indicating it needs that firmware boot. The procedure described all over the web is to put the software into the root directory of a FAT32 formatted USB drive and it should load that up once plugged into USB1 port. But not for me. I can see the LED on the USB chip flash for about...
