My half brother's TV stopped working. Samsung UE46ES8000, top of the line 46" 1080p smart edge LED backlit LCD TV. When it stops working, the TV screen will freeze and show crazy patterns, including vertical lines. About 2 years old, failed at 18 months, I've only just managed to get hold of it.

I suspect the panel may be at fault here but the odd thing is the TV won't turn off in this mode unless unplugged. So it could be a main board fault.

I haven't taken this set apart yet but am interested to know if anyone has seen this before, or if it's a common issue with this model or similar other models?

Main board is about £150... my brother is willing to pay that much but I must be certain of the fault first.

Can you post a good picture of the fault? You say "when it stops working"; is the problem intermittent?

Yes, it's intermittent. Working for over 3 hours now after I banged on the back a few times. I'm suspecting main board soldering failure on one of the large BGAs, so when I open it up I'll try pressing on them.

Have u tried pressing the BGA's on the main board tom ?

Very interesting... that would make for an easy fix. Last night, all it would do is the vertical lines. Nothing else. Sometimes solid green or blue screen. So quite similar pattern. Of course, wouldn't be the first time I've had multiple independent faults.

I had a un40es7500 come through recently with this exact fault. And the fix was that cable in the document. It was visibly browned just as that picture showed. I'm betting that is your fault.

I bought a replacement from searspartsdirect.com. But shouldn't be too hard to find since there is still a good stock of new parts for these es series TVs out there.

Opened the set up. The connector looks OK. But I am also not able to replicate the fault by pressing on the main BGA.

tom did you press on the others mine was not the main BGA and sometimes i could not get the screen to go good unless i pressed on the corners of the one i have circled in the picture,i ended up selling the screen on due to the cost of a mainboard was over £150 to buy !!

I will try that later. Ran fine for 2 hours. Some intermittent faults can be a right pain in the arse!

There is only one large BGA with four RAM chips around it. No second processor like on the D series.

Due to how fast hardware depreciates, it's probably not worth putting more than ~£300 into this. Couldn't find an exact main board for any less than £270. I don't expect it to sell for more than £800. My brother wants to sell it after it is fixed.

Well. I have tested this thing for 2 days straight. Working perfectly after cleaning and reseating that connector. Very surprised! Looks like despite all odds this one will live again.
