I'd consider the possibility of a missing drive signal on the Y-sustain, or a signal between the buffers going missing.

back on this again, TOM, because you said drive signal, thought i'd have a check on the cables.
on checking the ribbon cables from Y_SUS to top buffer, pulled it out and the cable has some damage to the tracks, some broken, and even some bits missing.
so my question is, where can i get new replacements ?
tryed to cut the old ones back a bit, but then there is not enough contact, and can't peel the back off to reveal or make longer contacts.
Probably the only place is a TV breaker who might have kept the cables. They are custom and very expensive in low quantities... I've had the same issue on an LG DVD player so wonder if it's a common issue with LG's cable supplier. In my case the metal contacts just broke off completely and wedged themselves in the connector.
