Blown Panasonic TC-P50S1

This is my buddy's TV. He said he heard multiple loud pops and then no power. It looks to have at least a problem on two of the boards. First of all, is it worth fixing a 5 year plasma, or has it already seen its useful lifespan? He said he loved the picture quality of it and that's why he wanted me to look at it.

On the power supply, the only problem I can see is that bulged thunderous 1400uF 220V Chemi-con cap.

On the SC board, there is at least a blown diode and FET. Is this thing worth fixing?

If it is only the FET and the diode, then yes it is worth fixing it. Also I recommend changing the 2 big caps on the power supply. Changing the two smaller ones might also be a good idea. You also might want to check the other boards, and componets on them, for damage as the there might be a short somewhre, but by the looks of it changing the FET and diode should be enough to get the tv up and running.

P.S. You might want to take the heatsinks of the two buffer boards from picture 7 and check the chips sometimes they get fried when a short occurs.

That cap may or may not be an issue. I find on the PSUs I have those big ones the tops tend to have a slight raise in their lids. Hard to say if the camera angle is making it look worse or not.

The TNPA4782 SC board though, board repair is usually the only option as these are near impossible to get and expensive.

I doubt it's just the P channel FET and the diode, i would expect other IGBTs and also some small SMD components as well.

I think around the $150 mark I see for people repairing these and you'd have to check the SD/SU boards and make sure they are not shorted too.

Definitely needs a big blow out, enough dust there combined with humidity could potentially short things out but the SC on these usually fails like this at some stage.

Is it worth it? All depends if your happy investing that sort of money. What's a used working 2009/10 model worth?

If you were good enough to work out how to repair the SC yourself I would say yes if you source the parts could work out cheap enough but HOMBRE is the only one I've read who has done a 4782 and he think he had 2 or 3 goes at it so parts cost could blow out .

I would try to repair it, but it's up to you
There is plenty info on this forum what to check, how to check, and that means alot of reading (at least in my case was like that )
Check buffers for shorts, SC is most definitely gone. $30-40 in parts is my guess, to change everything that is bad (but that is only rough guess - could be more or even less than that).

Thanks guys for the replies, I really appreciate it! I'm no expert on TV troubleshooting, by a long shot. My buddy didn't want to spend a ton of money on it just because of the age of it. We were hoping it would be something more simple. I would consider selling some of the boards for parts, but I wouldn't want to risk sending anyone a bad board.
