    Definite bad LG plasma panel?

Lg model 60PA6500-UA mfg date 2/2012
How do I determine beyond any doubt if my plasma panel is bad? I do not see any cracks, has always been handled carefully. There are thin colored vertical lines scattered randomly accross the panel with a few vertical black bands. All power supply voltages are good, it has new main, logic(twice), and all 3 address buffer boards replaced so far. All connections have been checked and panel ribbons are not abraided.
THIS IS ONLY A YEAR AND A HALF OLD!!! Thanks for reading.

You need to pt up a picture of it jpg less then 3mb using manage attachments
    - are the bands/lines always in the same place

You could have asked this in the other thread where all the infor was - we dont like double posting!

The bands seem to stay put but the lines appear to relocate at times, when I get home I'll check again to make sure, it's been a few weeks since I've messed with it. I'll see if I can get some video, I may need some help getting it posted, I'm new to forums and tech!

All those boards replaced under wty?

I'm thinking if you've replaced all that, especially the bottom address boards, sounds like bad panel. Black bands with coloured noisy vertical lines sounds like the ICs embedded on the bottoms ribbons have failed.

I guess LG don't want to help out of wty?

Re: Definite bad LG plasma panel?

Sorry Selldoor, I really don't know my way around a forum, Im new to this. I'm guessing you've seen my other more detailed post. I tried to get a 30 sec video of it with the test pattern terminals jumped, but I couldn't get the video to upload. I did get a still picture without test pattern jumped, not much different. In a dark room, the rest of the panel is lit a slight greyish color. I cycled it on and off a few times with the same results on the same sections.
tw2005, would the ribbon ICs show any pits or burns? I looked with my #2 reading glasses and a magnifying glass and couldn't see any problems. As for warranty, it was out by few months at the time it failed. From what I've read, talking to manufactures about problems is useless. Can a plasma panel be damaged electrically, as in a bad board, electrical surge, etc? If it had a crack wouldn't the gas escape and have no reaction at all? If a surge or lightning should there be some blackening or burnt spots? All other components plugged into the same surge protector are fine. Thanks!

Re: Definite bad LG plasma panel?

(PREVIOUS POST, HAS MORE INFORMATION) Thanks! I'm trying to figure out what went wrong. It originally started with not turning on, checked and had all voltages, checked all connections, no burn marks or pits or holes in anything. replaced the main board after Shop Jimmy helped me decide. It would then turn on with sound but no picture. Replaced logic board, had two thirds of the picture and had sound. After inspecting the suspected address buffer, I had thin vertical colored lines and a few vertical black bands. The sound also went away but with the panel distorted I can't see the settings. The logic board LED blinked a pattern of short-short-long-short. I took a chance and replaced the logic board again and all three address buffers. No change. Tom66 advised inspecting for abraision damage to the panel ribbons and to see what happens when disconnecting half of the left sus board. All ribbons are good, no rubbing. I can't seem to get the connectors on the sus board to come loose, I don't want to break anything, any suggestions? I'm not happy with the longevity of this tv, ONE AND A HALF YEARS OLD!!! Thanks to everyone for reading! LG plasma model 60PA6500-UA mfg date 2/2012

Re: Definite bad LG plasma panel?

Another note: before the picture was taken, at times there were more colored lines and I also found with the Y and Z sus boards disconnected, the logic board LED stopped blinking completely. It was blinking short-short-long-short. I'd also like some advice on how to get a buffer board unhooked from the Y sus. Tom66 suggested trying this as a test but the connectors are very tight unless I'm doing something wrong. I don't want to break anything. Thanks again!

As TW2005 said, it's very likely the ICs embedded in the panel that look to of gone bad, best thing you can do is to put the Tv back to it's original condition and pursue a claim using the SOGA(Sale Of Goods Act), at a year and half old it's a joke that it's doing this already, good luck.

Re: Definite bad LG plasma panel?

Unfortunately, Americans don't have any kind of SOGA act or anything similar. The best you can do is petition LG. Or, if you purchased the TV with a credit card, they may offer an extended warranty.

Bad plasma panels are pretty rare, but LG seems to be the worst offender. In the LED-LCD arena, bad panels are a lot more common with Samsung seemingly amongst the worst.

                    Ok guys, Thank You!
If the panel is cracked, would it still have the dim grey glow over the entire panel in a dark room? I figured a crack would let the gasses out and wouldn't light at all. Just curious.

It's cracked? Well, with modern plasmas, they do still work with cracks. Uh... picture not so good though... Case in point Pioneer Kuro...

If a plasma panel is cracked, you can always see it in the glass. In your case, it is probably just a panel failure.

I would say definitely the i.c's, I've seen this many times and it's always been the panel (or more specifically the driver ic's) to blame. The address boards at the bottom don't do an awful lot unlike the real buffers on the Y section where the ic's are on the board itself.

I have to say I've seen this more often on Panasonic plasma panels than LG, most LG (and Samsung) PDP's that I've seen with problems in this area have been more single pixel line type failures.

You could remove the panel and closely inspect for a crack, being a large display it is possible, though at the end of the day it's still a bad panel.

Thanks Clydeuk, since I'm new to forum communication and already fumbled a bit, is it ok to ask everyone if they had a limit around $800-$900, what 55"-60"" plasma (preferred) or LED tv you all would get? Would any of my new parts be damaged from my defective tv? If I can find another 60PA6500-UA, I may have a use for them later. Many Thanks for your help!

I would get a Panasonic plasma... but since you can only buy them used...

The second best option is a Samsung F8500 plasma or at a stretch an F5500/F5300 (get a warranty if you do.)

Panasonic & LG LED-LCD are OK - picture quality is pretty mediocre though.

Not to get off the subject but I had not idea that a picture could show with a cracked screen until I saw a Samsung PN51E490 on Craigslist recently. Looked very similar to the picture you posted. Huge black spot and a couple lines but had a visible picture. Thin profile design. I've had quite of few of these with broken screens but never fired one up. I may try the next one to see if I can test all the parts I have.

aaronwt6, That pic was from tom66. He was showing me it's possible to still have some lighting ability even when cracked. I'm finding tv theory and function to be fascinating, while owning and attempting to repair a fine example of modern day (QUALITY?) products to be raising my pistivity level. It's affecting everything, I repair school buses for a living and we fight this stuff every work day, we try to go to bat for our taxpayers. Too many greedy manufactures.

What parts can be salvaged from a plasma with a damaged display panel?
                                          by SurrealMustard
I recently found myself the proud owner of a later-model Samsung plasma (the PN59D7000 for those keeping score at home) whose panel was, unfortunately, damaged in transport. I'm now preparing to part it out, but am curious as to whether or not any damage would have come to any of the components by attempting to power it up with the panel being broken. I read in one Avsforum thread (for whatever that's worth 😂) that the "scan driver boards" (by which I assume he means buffer boards) could be impacted by doing so. Is that actually the case? If so, since I don't intend on selling bad...

LG 49UJ6500 LCD panel lighter band that goes away
                                          by howardc64
49UJ6500 LCD panel has a lighter band on top when first powered on. Goes away (or gets much fainter) after TV on for a few min. After powered off for awhile and power back on, same band appears. If powered on immediately after powering off, no or much fainter band. Running the latest firmware.

Disassembled the TV and lifted the LCD panel during testing. Band is on the LCD panel (can see the band on the panel as I lift it slightly) Backlight is perfectly even at the top edge. Double checked LCD panel alignment in the frame and is perfect but since band moved with the panel, its on...

SAMSUNG UN50TU8000F rebooting, backlight ok. No 12v to panel boards.

TV flashes backlight then reboots over and over. no image. Client said it used to have image for a bit before rebooting. Got worse over time.

                                          tcon is built into mainboard.
Only one cable goes to panel boards.
there is a cable from one panel board to the other that links them.
cost cutting measure that results in us having harder time to diagnose.
removing the link to the second panel board allows TV to stay on with stable backlight but no image.
used cut off tape method to mask 1 maybe 2 pins on the side of the cable that goes to that second panel board....

                                          QN55Q60R Service Menu Panel Help
                                          by Storyteller12
I had a the above tv qn55q60r that had a bad panel but everything else good. I had another panel here from un55nu6900 with bad leds and melted diffusers.

I put the nu6900 panel in and powered it up and it does work but there are lines vertical lines.

I was trying to change the panel type in the service menu but don’t see my exact panel. Anyway to fix this or someone have similar experience.

the clear picture is the panel type from the service menus on the nu6900. The other 1 is the panel type that was set for the q60r with the bad panel....

Missing LCD Panel Voltages VGH, VGL, VCOM (TCL 55P6US Sound & Backlight but NO Picture)

I have a TCL 55P6US with sound and backlight but no picture. This model does not have a T-CON board, and the right (rear perspective) panel board is fed from the left panel board. I have not been able to induce any change by disconnecting the secondary panel board or the tape cut-off method on the primary board.

There are a bunch of voltages missing on the panel boards. I can't find any shorted caps of the panel boards, and all of the missing voltage rails read in the kiloohms, which leads me to suspect the issue may lie on the circuit board, rather than a short in the panel.
