LG LCD TV 42HL30 too dark

My LG 42HL30 is showing up too dark.
After hours of resetting set to factory defaults and checking the options and adjusting the levels, it does not improve.
The blacks are a bit blurry around the edges most of the time, and once in a blue moon the brightness pops back for 1-2 seconds them goes dark again.

The screen looks like a negative image.

I opened it up and checked for obvious blown caps, nothing obvious was found. I didn't test them with any kind of metering or diagnostic equipment.

The sound is good and I get the same results (through 2 separate HDMI cables) from my BLU RAY player.

From time to time when I first power on the TV it appears brighter (normal) and then it goes dark as described above and stays that way.

    Here's how it looks

Not sure if my iPad captures the issue.

Perhaps try to find a pin on the main board named Dim and monitor the voltage on it when it is on bright and then goes dark.
Please upload pictures using attachment function when ask for help on the repair

I would check the Gamma voltages on the T-CON board, it does not look like the backlights changing brightness problem.

Thanks for the advice. It does seem like the brightness is kinda all over the place depending on the image on the screen. It does indeed brighten during sports or brightly lit multi camera programs (late night talk shows) and then the darks get too dark. Its almost like something isn't compensating for the shifts in brightness... off to check into it.

No T-con board on this one,two ribbon cables from main straight to panel....

Just an update... haven't had time to pull this TV apart and follow the advice noted here, but when the wife switched on the TV last night, the brightness came back and then some!

Now its too bright! Its stayed that way all night (well for a few hours). Crazy stuff.

Re: LG LCD TV 42HL30 too dark

Another update. Got my hands on a good priced main board and power supply. The brightness subsided and went darker and the colours went off again. As seen in the first YouTube video.

I put both parts in, one at a time, and the problem persists. By process of elimination, its either the T-CON board, a bad cable connection somewhere (which has also been checked now and all seems firmly in place) or a bad panel.

I took the long way around but I think I'm narrowing down the search to solve the problem.

As requested above please check the T-CON gamma voltages. If you need help with this, post a picture of your T-con

Actually I found a local Kijiji ad wanting 20 bucks for a TCON. I put it in and bingo! It fixed the issue!! Now I'm gonna take a voltage meter to the old one where you all specified and confirm your first suspicions!

                  Thanks for all the help!

70LE660U dark cloud or black screen with sound.
                    by Rozp
                    Hello Everyone,

This is my first post so I will try to be as precise as possible without making this post too long winded. Unfortunately I don't have pictures of the original problem but I included images of the TV internals.

I have a Sharp 70LE660U. The problem started a few months ago with the bottom row looking out of sync and was dark on the left side and then fading to transparent on the right side. Shortly after, a dark cloud appeared in the center of the screen. The dark cloud started small and shaded but the image was visible. It also affected the menu area....

                    LG 65UK6090PUA - picture dark
                    by Danstona
Was watching this set, and suddenly it went dark. Picture is still visible, just very dark. Tried checking all settings, adjusting brightness to 100% no change. Reset through menus, no change.
bought used boards from ebay (power and input boards) replaced with same results, changing brightness does seem to have a slight affect.. but not to normal visibility of picture.
I'm handy, fixed TVs before.. I can't see any issues with boards... hoping someone can point me in the right direction to properly diagnose. I don't believe the LEDs are caput, since the picture is on and equal...

Hello there i have a Sharp 80" LDC that has some dark spots in the middle of the screen, since its a 80 inch need another person so hang it on the wall or move it around, so i hope the collective wisdom can help me to determine what is wrong, I've been doing some research online and there is next to nothing about this TV, i tend to believe that the spots are due the back films/diffuser sheets, that are bit dirty, or perhaps one or two LEDs being burned, but what throws me off is that the dark spots are more noticeable when the image is bit dark like night scenes, and also noticeable when...

                    Hi all

While I have quite a decent background in electrical & electronic troubleshooting & repairs, this is my first time stripping down an LCD TV for repair.... I have inherited a 3yr old Panasonic LCD which has a picture, but it is quite dark (too dark to be watchable - but still quite easy to see; I didnt need a torch to see it).

I started by checking and trying to adjust all of the picture and backlighting levels, but that made little to no difference. I also did a factory reset.

From there I envisaged that the backlighting wasn't working, however...
