    General Question Part Picky-ness

Kinda have a general question on -exact part #s- vs -if it fits, it works-...

This came to a head with an LCD TV that has a decent picture for a few seconds than "fades" to a complete white out...

I was thinking it was either the video board or the TCON board.. I had a couple similar video boards I tried. Didn't fix the white out issue..

So, now I am looking at replacing the TCON board, hence my dilemma..

The exact part number board (T420XW01 V5) runs about $60-$80...

A search of the part number minus the version number shows me parts that look nearly identical, has the same type/size/position connectors, but are as low as $20...

Obviously, saving a few bucks is a good thing. But wasting a few bucks on a part that fits but doesn't work (I have had that happen on more than one occasion, repairing Tablet Digitizers) or worse, actually damages the TV is (also obviously) not desirable..

So, how picky are TVs when it comes to replacement/compatible parts??

    Thanx...

    very picky.

find the fuse on the panel or T-con and meter the voltage on both ends after it goes white with the black meter lead on the metal frame.

it could be a hairline break inside the fuse if your lucky.

I'll check that when I am back at my shop in the morning..

I am rather wary (IE total wimp ) when it comes to checking voltages while the TV is powered..

But, nothing ventured, nothing gained, eh??

Attached are my "tools" for checking voltages.. will either of them work??

      Thanx for the reply...

They should both work - Id stick with the red one at least it reads zero
to start with - Check the leads are not cracking and test it on a few batteries
or wallwart chargers. Get ussed to holding the probes and reading the result.
For the test mentioned it will be unlikely to be more than 24v.
