    Re: Panasonic TX-P42U30B Service Manual

Thats not a bad price, These boards are a bit of a pain to do, so many things can and do fail on 'em....

    I replaced 8 IGBT's, (6 x 30F131, 2 x DG302) 6 SM Resistors, 1 Driver Transistor pair, and 1 driver chip.

First run was with the V-SUS supply (White wire of the main supply to SN Board) wired in series with a 150W 240V inky-lamp as a precaution to other unseen faults killing the board again.
The set performed OK on dark images and those of medium brightness. During bright scenes--especially with advanced brightness/contrast settings, the SN board drew enough current to glow the lamp, lower the voltage and give a weird, mal-discharge, pink picture-- All due to the lowered VSUS at the SN board.

VSUS on my set was set to 'Low' in the engineer-settings, but is still at 217V.
During high brightness the voltage at the board would drop to 140V (as the lamp bulb glowed)

--There's a VSUS pre-set on the PSU, I set this down to 107V--its minimum setting and removed the bulb.

--Set performed normally. A test of the VSUS as outlined in the manual using white-screen indicated no issues of dead-pixels at the lower (107v) VSUS voltage, so that's where its gonna stay....

Trouble is with these series sets, the boards run extremely hot, the devices on them age prematurely and fail.

--Its just Bad Design in my opinion.

I too have now restored my board to full operation, but have installed various measures to keep this and the SS board cooler, as I believe this is the main cause of their failure.

I first installed some dead-toad-pads (silicone heat conductive pads) but all this did was make the plasma panel extremely hot in the area of the SN board and was worried of a local crack developing, so I fitted a small silent fan to the board above the hottest area too. This plasma panel has a steel backing that isn't that thick so not a very good sink of heat

Instead of an average temp of 70 degrees C, it now runs around 25-30 degrees at the devices average, after an hours test-time and doesn't heat up the panel.

These measurements were taken in a cool (15 deg C) room, I dread to think how hot this board would get in an overly heated house, or a hot climate with no cooling added!....

I just need an unscratched front-glass pane (screen protection/smoked glass) as the set currently doesn't have one--I removed it as it had a very severe scratch more or less dead centre.
Amazing the brightness of a Plasma picture --without this smoked glass pane in front of it, but in a well lit/bright room, doesn't look so good....

      Re: Panasonic TX-P42U30B Service Manual

For reference, here is the list of circuit-ref and parts replaced on this model board, in 42U30B SN board,- TNPA5349 --

      Q401, Q402, Q421, Q422, Q621, Q622, All 30F131

      R401, R402, R421, R422, All 7.5 ohm, 1210.

      IC502, 'D86' type.

      R531 10 ohm 1210.

      Q531 Dual Transistor.

      D401, RFN1501.

      D421, RFN10.

      Q441, Q451, both DG302.

I have a theory--Untested yet--as to Why these sets of IGBT's tend to get hot and fail, I noted that the Gate-Resistor Isnt what could be called, Optimal for switching-speed.
According to datasheets, for optimum speed, generally a 5 ohm resistor is used. These sets have a 7.5 ohm. I believe the reason for this is EMC reduction so as not to interfere with other devices. To get compliance set-makers must comply with EMC regulations. I believe that its possible the Matsushita (Panasonic) needed to reduce the SUS Switching-speed somewhat to comply. This has the disadvantage that these parts then dissipate More heat than they would otherwise....

Hi Alastair e, I am very interested in where you positioned the cooling fans and how many did you fit? did you just go for 240v coaxial ones?

Well, TBH--They were out of an old 480p Sony plasma set I scrapped, and run from the 15V line via 33 ohm resistors...

They are only small things, less than 2" square but do the job.

            Re: Panasonic TX-P42U30B Service Manual

I know this post is a tad old, but was wondering Andy, if you can remember who was able to repair the PCB in N.Ireland.

I have a TX-P42U30B with 6x rapid flashes of the green LED, then nothing after that. I believe it could be the SN board.

Is that what you had repaired in the end Andy?

            Many thanks,
            Rob

                  Re: Panasonic TX-P42U30B Service Manual

I too fitted fans to the U30B that I repaired and ultimately kept in the bedroom. Ran them from the switched 15V(F) via the SS board connector, cooling the SN board, so the fans only turn on when the plasma panel is on. Set has been working great for over six months now with no sign of issues, originally failed with 8000 hours on it.

                    Re: Panasonic TX-P42U30B Service Manual

I'm still debating the addition of a fan, but may well add one once I've confirmed it is my SN board that is faulty and got a replacement in.

One thing I have noticed with my TX-P42U30B. Ever since I've had it, when in standby, periodically the relays will do a few clicks. Nothing ever flashes or comes on on the panel, the red standby light remains on and steady.

Anyone else witnesseed the same behaviour and is it normal?

There's a feature built-in where it searches for Over The air updates. The relay click is the TV waking up to search but it's just the A-board running , no panel.

If i'm up to stupid hours and I'm near any of my pannys you hear the relay click.

                      It's in the manual.

                      Auto Update Search in Standby

Automatically performs a search in standby
and downloads an update, if any software
                      updates are available.
                      • The automatic updating is performed at
                      night under the following conditions:
                      • Standby
(TV turned Off with the remote control)

I believe you can turn this off, try it and see if what you describe stops.

                        Ah, I didn't realise that.

I'll see if I can turn it off and see if the behaviour stops and coincides with that intentional feature being disabled.

                        Thanks very much.

                          Just another quick question.

If I'm close to the TV (within 1-2 feet), you can see an active sparkling going on, most notably on black or dark backgrounds. When sitting at a normal viewing position, I don't see this effect. I've only noticed it so far when using my computer, but I think it's there on Sky TV too.

Is this normal with plasmas as I don't get the same on an LCD. Or is it a fault or something that can be adjusted via the Service Manual.

                            Quite normal, called Dithering.
