    SONY KDL-40V4100 Tab bonding fix

This TV has horizon black bands (about 0.1") on the 3.00" on the top section of the screen, the bars will come and go when I flex the panel.
This time I use silicone thermal pad from Dealextreme # 118741. I fold it into 3 layers and install them on top left (this is the one with bad bonding) and on the top right. I did not do them all just to see how well this fix will hold up.
The PCB on the right was also curving up badly that the trim pot also touch the frame, I use KAPTON tapes to hold down the board flat.
This chassis i easy to work on, I was able to mount the chassis on its stand to keep it upright.

Nice, I generally find the 40" Samsung panels to be the hardest though. Did you take a picture of the fault before you did the repair?

I had a hard time flexing the frame or putting my fingers on the bad tab with one hand and holding the camera on my right hand, otherwise I would have to wait a couple hours for it to act up and stay bad.

Good choice for a demo flick

So you tripled up on that Dealextreme? How thick do you think that was when you did that?

I hope the Mitsubishi I am going to attempt to try this on is as easy to get to like this Sony

        thanks for the picture tutorial!

It is about 6.2mm not compressed and about 4mm when I squeeze with my fingers. The good thing is that it is sticky so it stays in place real well when I put the frame back in place (you will put the frame in with top section in place first). Time will tell how long it will last.

Re: SONY KDL-40V4100 Tab bonding fix

Complete newbie here so please be kind!

What does this accomplish? Does it push down on the tab? Is it for heat absorption?

I grabbed a 40" Sony TV today that has a tab bond symptom but I've never done this kind of repair before. It'll be a week or two before I get around to messing with it probably though. I'm MOVING tomorrow and now I have a "broken" 40 inch TV to move too. It's in my car already on top of everything else already packed in there. Thankfully I don't have much of anything to move to start with.

Re: SONY KDL-40V4100 Tab bonding fix

What appears to happen is glue or solder breaks at the point where the chip meets the flex, or where the connection meets the PCB... This causes a variety of symptoms varying from motion distortion, loss of image on one half, double/triple images, stuck/intermittent vertical lines, etc. The tab shim presses the connection down, which should help maintain it... that's the theory, at least.

I have found that on some panels it works really well (100% success rate) - this mainly applies to the smaller ones. 26" Chimei in particular I have done 5 of the same panel and they all worked perfect.

On others, it doesn't work at all. I've had very mixed results with Samsung panels, as used in these Sony TVs. I've had one work for a week then die later.

Re: SONY KDL-40V4100 Tab bonding fix

The symptom with the one I nabbed from by the dumpster (it hadn't been there TOO long) is it powers up, good colors, good brightness but a portion of the left side has many small, different color, vertical lines. I can see the menu and such coming up when I press the buttons and how it tries to change channels.

                It's an old 2008 model: Sony BRAVIA S KDL-40S4100
                http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model-...OC=3#/howtoTab

A new 40" Sony TV in the 40" size is about $500, but that's for a Smart TV. Sony doesn't seem to make "dumb" TVs in that size anymore, but who cares for the price I paid for this one.. $0 so far.

I just watched a video where someone used double sided scrap booking tape and cheap silicon tubing to fix a 46" Sony: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHst6pKLtTE

The longevity of their fix is unknown, however.

Where do you buy the silicon stuff you use?

Something ultra sticky makes the most sense to me, like what you use.

I don't know how well double sided tape under warm conditions in a TV would hold up. A light bump of the TV might move the silicone tubing placed into the TV shown in the video I linked, if the glue is warm and the is burned or melted away.

edit: or.. is that stuff not sticky? Hm..

It is the heat transfer pad, from Digikey (see the P/N in the link) or Dealextreme.
The top section of the TV gets quite hot.

How much do you use? I see some thinner pieces on ebay for very cheap from China. You seem to be fixing them all the time. It looks like in one of your photos, you only used a small piece from a big chunk. For me, buying a couple thinner, smaller pieces might be better.

This 100x100x1 might be plenty for one or two fixes. I'd have to double it up to get 2mm thick, then roll over the doubled up piece for 3 layers to get it similar to how you did it:

The thin one from dealextreme is folded into 3 layer, the one from digikey is only one layer.
Dealextreme is a lot cheaper (you get more) than the one from Digikey.
These pads have stickiness to them but I use KAPTON (high temp tape) tape to hold them in place also

I have one with the same symptoms and now have it on the bench. KDL-40XBR4.
I can hold down on the ribbon tab that connects to the pcb and the picture is good. Not sure yet what material to use to creat some pressure on that ribbon when the frame goes back on?
This thread has given me some direction though. Thanks Guys!

I would do them all since it is not easy taking the panel apart and risk damaging the panel. i did not do all on this one because I want to find out if the pad from dealextreme will last as long as the one from digkey, so far it is still working.

Here is a pic of it right now. I have other stuff to deal with right now.. but I'll get around to trying to fix this eventually.

I factory reset it since it was stuck in Spanish and I couldn't see the menu. My comcast remote set to the TV worked to let me do that. I could see enough of the prompts to get it going in English and program one channel for the SD cable box.

Re: SONY KDL-40V4100 Tab bonding fix

Well damn. I guess the LCD is just dead in this one. It changed from the colored lines to a big black patch while having it apart right now. The tab bonds dont look damage and I didn't do anything drastic movement wise to damage it further.

It was colors, I turned it off then back on again and then it was black in that area.

The short ribbon cable that you can disconnect, I disconnected and reseated it also on the problem side (power off, unplugged, after power supply click when unplugged). no help.

EDIT: The colored lines came back after another power cycle including unplugging it until it clicked. Maybe it's a power supply problem and not the LCD?

Re: SONY KDL-40V4100 Tab bonding fix

I guess I'm gonna just reassemble and throw on craigslist for $20 and see if anyone wants it for parts since it's most likely the LCD panel.

There's lots of threads here on badcaps saying this model and other Sony TVs have rotten LCDs. It's too bad Sony doesn't mean high quality anymore, same as ever other brand.

Unless someone has another idea? I don't want to go buying parts for it, stabbing in the dark trying to fix it if the LCD itself is bad. I wish I knew for sure. I could part it out on ebay if the LCD is bad. The various boards are worth a bit, with the main board (with the inputs) is worth the most, it seems.

EDIT: It might be the t-con board I've read but I'm not sure I want to spend $15 for one off ebay even if it has a return policy (I'd lose $5 or so returning it). but i guess it might be worth a shot if it actually fixes it. I removed and examined the existing one but I didn't see anything obviously wrong with it. But then again the chips could be burned inside or something.

I now have it mostly reassembled except for the back cover. I have the screws well sorted in a pill reminder container and the have the screw list written down for what goes where and how many. I took the time to do that when disassembling. I took a pencil and wrote numbers next to screw holes also so I could see what went where too. Then I can just erase the numbers when I'm finished.

Diagnosed this TV as having a failed main board which I've replaced with one from a KDL 55HX850. They are (supposedly) the same board.

Being 'Smart TV' it requires a firmware reboot when you swap out boards such as T-Con or main board. It starts with a black screen and flashing yellow and green LEDS, indicating it needs that firmware boot. The procedure described all over the web is to put the software into the root directory of a FAT32 formatted USB drive and it should load that up once plugged into USB1 port. But not for me. I can see the LED on the USB chip flash for about...
