STR W6053s is a packaged regulator. It wasn't the device I was thinking of necessarily, but I don't have a circuit diagram so I'm just going from my knowledge of how these SMPS usually work. The power MOSFET are three terminal devices mounted on the heatsink. Usually there will be about four of them.
Is the diode that was failed connected to the STR W6053s? (Trace the tracks and see if it is.) If so, then I'd reckon this device is U/S. With your diode function, measure across pin 1 and 3 of the STR W6053s. If it appears to be dead short you know for sure it's cactus. It has a FET drain and source sitting across these two pins. If you see some resistance or voltage drop on diode function then it might not have failed.
If you look on E-Bay you can pick these devices up for just a few bucks. Given your symptoms it is worh taking the gamble and changing it over.
Maintain the faith - should be an easy fix to get this one going again!
