Sony KDL-40V3000. 5 blinks error code

    hi, I am newbie here.
I need an advice from you guys.
I have Sony KDL-40V3000. 5 blinks error code repeatedly with pause.
According to service manual. it is tcon error.
When I checked tcon board, fuse is open.
I shorted this fuse by a strand of wire, when TV is ON, smoked comes out from tcon board.
I will try to order/buy tcon board, but my question is, is the tcon only the problem? how could I know if panel is OK?
Based on the service manual, there are also error codes for Panel temp and Balancer (Panel) error. Is the standby blink code could detect panel problem also if you have defective tcon? please help. sorry I used this thread coz cant post new one.

    Reply from Glitcher:

Remove the ribbon cables that connect to the panel. Replace the fuse and see if itll blow when its not connected to the panel.

If it still blows then its probably a bad tcon board. If not then the panel is shorting it.

Re: Sony KDL-40V3000. 5 blinks error code

      Hi Glitcher,
I have no fuse part, so I used again a strand of wire.
I tried to short the fuse using a strand of wire.
Removed ribbon cable that connects to the panel.
Turned ON tv, no smoke, no Error blinks, power LED in Green, backlight lamp is ON, no picture.
Turned OFF tv, put the ribbon cables.
Turned ON tv, no smoke, no Error blinks, power LED in Green, backlight lamp is ON, no picture.
      I put antenna.
Turned ON tv, no smoke, no Error blinks, power LED in Green, backlight lamp is ON, no picture. With sounds (local channel).

      Here are my questions:
      1. Is Sony diagnosis (error blink) is checking only TCON input ckt, no output checking?
      2. Why no error code if I disconnect ribbon cables? What for are the balancer (panel error) code?
      3. Is the tcon is still ok? it smoked yesterday.
      4. what could be the next step to do?
      5. Is it tcon or panel issue?

      Thank you for helping.

The Balancer board is part of the backlights, if you do get the backlights, then you do not have Balancer problem.
When the fuse on the T-CON board is blown, then the T-CON cannot send the OK signal back to the main board, but it cannot tell if there is short or problem in the circuit in side the LCD panel. When the T-CON smoked, that part may have blown into open circuit so when you jumped the fuse with wire, that blown component/s does not draw current any more. So basically, you can still have shorts circuit in the panel, there may be some MLCC caps on the long PCBs in the panel assembly.

          Thank you Budm.
So this means, buying new TCON is not advisable anymore if Panel have short circuits.
It will just blown the fuse of the TCON again.
And the Panel short ckt is not repairable.

This TV was shipped from other country, and it is working before the shipment.
Maybe this is the cause of the Panel short ckt, improper handling.

Thank you Glitcher, Budm, and Badcaps Admin for helping.

I have a question, if the Panel have short circuits, why the tcon board smoked? why not the ribbon cables? Ribbon cables have higher current capability than the components on the tcon board?

You have to look at the components that smoked to see what they are, the ribbon cable may have connected in parallel to handle the current, we do not know. At this point you can try putting new T-CON and see if it will burn up or try to probe the board inside the LCD panel to see if it has shorted circuit.

                Thank you Budm.
I remember, when it smoked, the pad near an SMD cap burnt (the pad is still ok when I cleaned it, so I think the smoke came from this pad).
Please see encircled pad near the cap on the attached photo.

I will check if this cap causes the short circuit.
And as you suggest, I will check also the board inside the panel.
If tcon part causes the short ckt, it gives me hope and I will order new tcon.
                Thanks.

So does that MLCC SMD cap burnt out badly? MLCC will fail as shorted circuit when it goes bad. You can also see another cap close to the second connector that goes to the panel. I believe those are filter cap for the voltage feeding the boards inside the panel, so to me you have the failed MLCC that caused the fuse to blow, not due to shorted circuit in the panel.

                    Hi Budm,
The cap is still ok physically.
When I desoldered this cap, I found burnt pad (underneath this cap). Please see picture.
You are correct, multiple pins cable for this line with a component (B2) in series with Cap pad 1. Cap pad 2 is gnd.
                    1. I checked this Cap (unmounted) it is not shorted (maybe shorted before it smoked).
                    2. I checked also resistance across the Caps (for left and right ribbon cables), they both in 20~30 ohms (I am using analog meter) with and without ribbon cable.
                    3. I am not sure what component is B2, coil? both components are 0 ohm across and no burnt pads.
I could not access the board in the panel but according in number 2, when ribbon cables connected, the resistances are about 20-30ohms not 0 across the caps in both cables.

New tcon will arrive tues or wed.
                    I will update later.
                    Thanks.

That 'B' is the Ferrite bead (small inductor, <1 Ohm). The 20~30 Ohms does not sound right at all to me. At this point I believe the problem is in the T-CON, not in the panel.

                        Thank you Budm.

                        Anyone could help me....?
I will go to electronic parts shop tomorrow and please help how could I know if the new tcon is compatible in my LCD panel?

                        TCON board number = 4046HSC4LV3.3
                        TCON lot number = J1837H8A062W 007880
TV was bought in Canada and it is made in Mexico.

Should I look for exact part number? how about lot number? it should be 1837? other characters in lot number could be different?
                        Please help.

                        Thank you.

                                      Hi Budm,

The TV is now working after replacing the tcon board!
Thank you very much for your help!
Next time in repairing, I would do the ff: ask help from this site, board level checking, and not to use strand of wire replacement for the fuse
It could saved me cost and time if I detected that bad MLCC SMD cap on the tcon board.

Also thanks to glitcher, badcaps admin, and shopjimmy.

                                          by thelankanguy
The TV shows a black screen with no image.
TCON ribbon connectors were disconnected individually for image and there was no half image even.
Later both ribbons were disconnected and TCON voltages were tested.
12V, 3.3V, 1.8V were seen present but VONE signal reads 0V.
There is also a short to ground in this circled inductor.
Is this a TCON issue or something else ?...

                                          Hi,

I have this problem with my Sony 55' AG9.
                                          It flashes 4x.
I have found the service manual, and seems it is the TCON.

Before I buy a TCON can someone check the vid?

                                          Thanks in advance!...

                                          Hi all,

I have the subject TV and it will work normally sometimes but suddenly go black and give the 2 red blinks blink code. When this happens, I check the power supply board voltages and all I have is the Standby 3.3V and BL_ERR 2.2V. When it's working normally, all power supply board voltages look normal and stable. I've checked the backlights with a tester and they all test good. I've also read that the 2 red blinks is a faulty power supply board, so could it be throwing up an erroneous BL_ERR?

Any Sony experts out there that can help??...

Hi, hoping for some views on this one which I've not come across before. The TV generates an image that has 12 noticeable bands across it. The image is still there and accurate, but the colour (or perhaps the brightness) changes gradually across each band which creates a noticeable 'step change' at the edge of each band. Given it's a 4K TV with 2160 rows of pixels, I'm guessing the 12 bands correspond to 12 gate drivers of 180 rows each. If this guess is right, then perhaps:
                                          a) all the gate drivers are malfunctioning the same way (which seems unlikely), or
                                          b) the Tcon board is malfunctioning,...

Just bought this for 10 bucks yesterday hoping to fix it. The guy said water dropped inside from a dehumidifier hose and it started showing black and white vertical bars then went blank. When I got it home and turned it on it came on fine and displayed correctly but I was noticing faint vertical bars in the image. After a little bit I turned it off and back on and it was a black screen again. I opened it up to check for water damage and corrosion but didn't find anything of the sort. I cleaned the ribbons anyway and reconnected them but still got a blank screen. If I disconnect the right side...
