Hard to believe although Im dealing with a TV which should be throwing an error too but isnt... so yeah its possible.
If he checks the backlights with the meter that he just ordered and they are within spec then i'll get 100% behind the IC idea.

With spikes from the mains, every delicate integrated circuit is subject of fails, both on the power board, and on the main board, the more close to the source of current.. bye..
