    Multi colours on Samsung LE40M86BDX.

As you can see from the pictures it's just all over the place, my guess is a T-con problem. I've already been in the service menu but nothing is making any real difference at all.

The second picture shows bad image retention.

Tried that yesterday, no difference, tried different screen size, different screen type etc, all had very little if any effect.

That's a tcon issue. More specifically on the tcon there is a gamma IC. AS15-F or G or thereabouts. It may be bad.
Did I leave the soldering iron on?

yep, gamma issue, continued use will most likely cause it to go to a "negative" like a photo negative.

replace t-con, for piece of mind, try reseating lvds cable, clean contacts with iso alcohol,at both ends, just to rule it out,99% sure gamma proccesor has though
fixed so far...376 lg lcd tv's,24 onn tv;s,24 panasonic lcd,16 jvc lcd,12 marshall jcm800 amps, refurb of various disco equipment lighting, old style disco decks ,and a flymo!

You can check gamma voltages to confirm if IC is bad or not, but it looks bad to me.

Why do the better manufactures use these chips. It seems they have a terrible failure rate. I just replaced one in a 46" Samsung. Picture is till inferior to my 2007 model.

Probably a matter of not knowing about the high failure rate.

OK, so the T-con board has the notorious AS15-F gamma chip installed, I've found a replacement board at £50 which is just extortionate so I'm going to try and replace the chip, I can get the chip here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AS15-F-AS1...item1e800bfea1. Now I've never changed a chip like this before but for £2.50 it's worth a go as it's certainly better than £50, all I really want to know is what I need and how best can I do this in the home? I don't mind spending a few pounds on some extra equipment but of course I'm wanting to keep it as cheap as I can, thanks as always, Andy.

I should add: there is no heat sink pad in place so I shall add one after the repair.

My experience after replacing an as15 chip, the broken chip heats a lot (using my finger) but with the new chip its cold, before i was planning to put a heat sink but realized its not the overheating that cause the failure, maybe bad manufacturing or design?

Your T-CON board is for AUOPTO LCD panel, you must not have the same version as shown at Shopjimmy, the T-CON as shown at SJ uses IC MAX9590.

I just did this swap yesterday. I'll post a guide. In short, if you don't have a hot air station (like I don't), I recommend a rework product called Chipquik. It's an alloy you reflow over the part you want to remove like solder. It mixes with the solder already on the part and lowers it's melting temperature enabling you to keep all the traces melted at once and pull the part easily.

Thanks for the help guys, agreed on the gamma chip, I managed to get a replacement T-con and all is well, total cost just £28, can't complain, Andy.

                                  Hi All

I have an LE40M86 with exactly the same issue, powers up with a good picture then after 20 seconds the picture starts to saturate until eventually we get the full psychedelic effect.

I tried the service menu changes and reseated the LVDS connectors but no difference so hopefully a t-con swap will do the trick. One thing I did notice is that the teletext image is unaffected, always sharp with the correct colours... does that help confirm that its not a main board problem?
