How to tell whether it's a plasma or an LCD TV, without opening the set? What is the fastest way to identify it?

Re: ID an LCD or a Plasma from outside?
what do you mean by picture only and not physically in front of the TV? Physically touch the screen is it made of plastic material or is if its plastic in the screen is completely black its lcd. if the screen is glass its plasma. a tell tale sign is a color the screen LCD seriously pitch black in have a matte finish plasmas are shiny gloss like glassDid I leave the soldering iron on? -
Re: ID an LCD or a Plasma from outside?
Many plasmas have a grey or blue tint to the panel when off. Almost every LCD is black. Also all 42" 720p/480p plasmas will have visible electrode lines unlike LCDs.Please do not PM me with questions! Questions via PM will not be answered. Post on the forums instead!

Re: ID an LCD or a Plasma from outside?
I've found that all plasmas I have seen have a glass screen
and I have not seen an LCD with a glass screen yet. Yes Lcd screens have glass layers in them but never have the 1/8" thick front layer like plasmas do.Last edited by 120volts; 12-10-2013, 06:39 PM.Dan "TV Tinkerer"Comment

by ArMaaN376Hello,
I am having Samsung PS51E550 Plasma TV. While the TV was working, a crackling sound heard & video went off with audio still ON. After switching it off & ON, the red LED on TV blinks six times & then off.
Opened TV cover & observed foll
a) Green LED on the small PCB blinks at @5-6sec ON & off for 3-4 secs. Red LED on logic board ON
b)Vs & Va on power supply board raises momentarily to 209v & 58v resp & then drops.
c) Cold test on Y-main board shows all 3 pins of FGPF4536 IGBT short to Grnd.
How to confirm Y -Buffer board... -
by jm1234Hi,
anyone able to provide the service manual for old plasma Panasonic TX-P42ST50E?
It turns off almost immediately (0~5 seconds after pressing the on/off button) and starts flashing the red diode 6 times.
I disconnected the left-hand side board (SC?, both the ribbon cable and the power cable to it) and also another ribbon going to bottom left board. Then the led signal is 8 flashes. According to service guide to another Panasonic plasma it would mean the left-hand side board is faulty. But I'm not sure it 100% applies to my model.
I checked that board for any obvious faults... -
by KYBOSHPicked up a bahemoth plasma TV not too long ago and just now getting around to looking at it.
No picture but you hear the TV static (white noise) playing loud and clear.
The back was already taken off (and no screws were provided) as the previous owner had already taken a look.
But it seems they didn't get too far and just left it.
When I first took a look I was amazed at how pristine the inside looked.
Its as if the TV had been in a time capsule.
Caps looked like they were just pulled off the self.
Copper coils had no sign of corrosion on... -
by porfyriadhsHello . I have a problem with a samsung plasma tv stuck in bootloop . The TV is Samsung PS51D6900DS plasma smart tv .Need help if anyone have any suggestions
Thanks a lot !! -
I recently found myself the proud owner of a later-model Samsung plasma (the PN59D7000 for those keeping score at home) whose panel was, unfortunately, damaged in transport. I'm now preparing to part it out, but am curious as to whether or not any damage would have come to any of the components by attempting to power it up with the panel being broken. I read in one Avsforum thread (for whatever that's worth 😂) that the "scan driver boards" (by which I assume he means buffer boards) could be impacted by doing so. Is that actually the case? If so, since I don't intend on selling bad...
