LG 60" Plasma TV Picture Problem

    Hi,

My TV has just recently started to lose its picture for a split second at random intervals. Say, on average, 6-12 times a minute. The loss only lasts for a fraction of a second - so I guess you could call it flickering? But it makes watching TV next to impossible!

I originally thought that it may be caused by the Rogers NextBox 3 HDPVR - which I just switched over to from Bell. But I have tried every conceivable thing (connecting through the AVR vice direct to the TV / tried the standard def box that I use upstairs on this TV / even hooked Bell back up) to confirm that it was not the NextBox 3 that was at fault - although the timing is suspicious - never had a problem with the TV for 5 years using Bell and now within a month of switching over to Rogers this?

Weird thing is though that if I leave the channel on the On Demand for Rogers the picture is fine and doesn't flicker?

I did replace the Y-Drive recently to correct a loss of picture on the bottom of the TV (about 4" horizontally at the bottom). This went well and the TV was working like new again.

So what do you think can be causing this loss/flickering?

Also, if I have to get a new TV which brand of Plasma would you recommend - I will be getting an extended warranty this time!

    Thanks Much.

It could be a bad Y-Sus. I'd open the TV and monitor voltages during the flickering. As far as a replacement TV is concerned, which I don't think will be necessary in your case, Panasonics are the highest rated TVs.

      Hi CapKid,

One other thing I forgot to mention is that I run everything through an AVR to HDMI 1 on the TV. All other connections (Xbox / Wii / Patriot BoxOffice (for movies from computer)) play flawlessly - no flicker. Only the cable TV (NextBox 3) causes this flickering? Which doen't make sense to me?

Thanks for the Panasonic recommendation - this is where I may be going this PM.

Sounds like I would rule out the tv as the fault if no other input can reproduce it. Is the AVR an Onkyo by chance ? They are known for failing capacitors on the digital/hdmi board and some inputs start acting up before others.

Maybe try switching around your inputs see if the fault follows the input.

Yeah, the TV seems to be fine. If you want to buy a new TV, just say so

            Hi,

Yeah, I've tried all of that switching (the AVR is a Pioneer Elite). I ended up going out and buying a new TV (Panasonic 65" with extended warranty to 5 years). I will take this TV apart and start exploring (again) so expect a new post as I start to fiddle around and need to know how to "X" or "Y" and where is "Z" etc.

Thanks again for the help and I do hate parting with the money!!
