    What causes PDP failure?

Besides the obvious cracked screen, what causes a plasma display panel to fail?
And yes, I'm curious about failure modes of the panel itself.

    Re: What causes PDP failure?

There are address drivers bonded along the bottom of the panel: these drive the data onto the panel. When they fail you get stuck lines/blocks. Not repairable. I'd estimate around 90% of panel failures due to this.

There are scan ribbons along one side of the panel: these can de-laminate (extremely common on 2009 and 2010 Samsung sets) causing horizontal lines to appear. Not repairable. I'd estimate <5% of panel failures due to this.

You can get a short between the scan and sustain electrodes, causing the buffer/drive board to fail (extremely common on 2007 Panasonic 1080p plasmas.) Believed not repairable, though I think it may be possible to "blow out" a short, I have not yet tried this theory. I'd estimate <3% of panel failures due to this.

You can get maldischarge due to ion implant damage in the panel. Causing a permanent misdifussion or sparklies which clear after warming up. (Extremely common on LG 2005~2008 plasmas.) Somewhat repairable, but never completely. I'd estimate <2% of panel failures due to this.

      Busted panel corners... Repairable?
      by x_orange90_x
I have a 50" Toshiba bezel-less that I replaced backlights in a few weeks ago. The tape didn't hold well so the panel started hanging from the top. The pressure caused the two bottom corners to shear off. I can see a court contact on the right corner, but the left is gone in assuming. The screen is not cracked anywhere else, but it displays no image.

Is it at all repairable? I'm assuming not....

LG 49UJ6500 LCD panel lighter band that goes away
      by howardc64
49UJ6500 LCD panel has a lighter band on top when first powered on. Goes away (or gets much fainter) after TV on for a few min. After powered off for awhile and power back on, same band appears. If powered on immediately after powering off, no or much fainter band. Running the latest firmware.

Disassembled the TV and lifted the LCD panel during testing. Band is on the LCD panel (can see the band on the panel as I lift it slightly) Backlight is perfectly even at the top edge. Double checked LCD panel alignment in the frame and is perfect but since band moved with the panel, its on...

SAMSUNG UN50TU8000F rebooting, backlight ok. No 12v to panel boards.
      by triplefour
TV flashes backlight then reboots over and over. no image. Client said it used to have image for a bit before rebooting. Got worse over time.

      tcon is built into mainboard.
Only one cable goes to panel boards.
there is a cable from one panel board to the other that links them.
cost cutting measure that results in us having harder time to diagnose.
removing the link to the second panel board allows TV to stay on with stable backlight but no image.
used cut off tape method to mask 1 maybe 2 pins on the side of the cable that goes to that second panel board....

      QN55Q60R Service Menu Panel Help
      by Storyteller12
I had a the above tv qn55q60r that had a bad panel but everything else good. I had another panel here from un55nu6900 with bad leds and melted diffusers.

I put the nu6900 panel in and powered it up and it does work but there are lines vertical lines.

I was trying to change the panel type in the service menu but don’t see my exact panel. Anyway to fix this or someone have similar experience.

the clear picture is the panel type from the service menus on the nu6900. The other 1 is the panel type that was set for the q60r with the bad panel....
