    Hitachi plasma 42" 42PD9500TA

I posted this in A guide to fixing/troubleshooting some common plasma TV problems 5 days ago but get no reply. I hope the moderator allow me to make a new thread.

Have a Hitachi plasma 42" 42PD9500TA, got it in Dec 2006. Not the best plasma even in its day but I love the way it scale 4:3 signal on 16:9.

This had been running almost non stop since 2006 with 12hours or more everyday. but today it suddenly switch itself off, I turn it back on with remote and it switch off again after an hour, then half an hour, gradually it switch almost immediately after I press the remote controller. standby power red LED is solid, not blinking, sounds fine when its on. power supply issue? cause everything looks fine, no picture artifact whatsoever.

As I have almost zero knowledge in electronic, I have no idea how to troubleshoot. Since Hitachi no longer produce plasma and the part is virtually impossible to find, this 6+ year plasma is worth less than $100 even if everything work. It doesn't make any economical sense to spend >$100(changing boards, chips, etc) to repair it.

Could anyone please take a look at the pictures attach and advise me if this is a bloated cap?
    p.s. board is flip horizontally.

Since then, I had changed the capacitor to new cap but it seems the fault wasn't lie in the PSU, at least not that particular cap. although the coil noise is quite loud.

I one by one disconnect every connectors I can find and finally found the culprit. it is the one on the top right corner, sec from right--the longer one. whenever the connector is inserted, the plasma will soft off or switch off, the same symptom I described above. I only manged to use the one "HDMI 1" connection, with no sound output from the plasma. all other input connections including aerial have no display--If I'm right, the connector is to supply power--I had shut it by removing the connector. the HDMI is on another board so it still work. if anyone need to know, the connector came from the PSU board, 11 o'clock from the bloated Cap. remove it also solve the switch off issue.

I physically examine the board but found no burn mark or bloated cap. since this is LSI board with many tiny SMD IC/chip/cap...it is impossible for me to troubleshoot and I doubt any repair guy would wanna touch it. I'm asking can anyone tell me what could possibly causing the shutdown issue?
    short circuit?
    dead IC/chip?
or the easiest way for me, when can I find a replacement?

    Thanks.

Places to buy the board from:
    http://dsa.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_sa...A&LH_PrefLoc=2

You should be able to use the one with two tuners (multiple cans), it appears to be an optional PIP mode which will only apply to analog TV (not really important given most analog TV is no longer available.)

Thanks tom66, the board looks exactly the same as mine, guess I should just get a replacement instead of trying to troubleshooting with my little knowledge in electronic.

just asking, what do you think is causing the problem?

Possible it is short circuiting one of the power supply rails due to a fault on the board.

You mean the it wasn't the input/signal board but the power supply rail feeding the board? in that case, replacing the board won't solve the issue, am I right?

No it could be a short circuit on the input board causing problems.

Hi, this is my personal laptop, which the original board (lets call it Board A) blew up PU8700 (TPS51486), making a hole on the board, i had left the laptop at my desk one day with the battery fully charged and didn't touch it for a week, but when i tried to turn it on it didn't
Thought the battery was dead, so i plugged in the charger then tried to power on, the power LED blinked once, charged LED still orange, unplugged the charger, plugged in again and I noticed the "magic smoke" smell, so i unplugged the charger, removed the back cover and saw the blown IC (the "magic...

I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

                Problem

This is an LG edge LED lit LCD Display. The LEDs are on the bottom edge of the display. There are 2 bars (left and right) Each bar has many LEDs and a 6 pin connector. Each pin drive several LEDs thus is the highest current flow / heat junction. The weak lead free solder gradually fails with thermal expansion/contraction cycling and increases resistance. PSU will compensate up to a point, then when the current is too high, PSU just shut down the backlight causing a dark display. I have even seen one which the connector just fell off as solder points became completely detached....

                • TV came with vertical bars and no image. Found faulty TVS on left buffer board. Also replaced T-Con (may have damaged the original while hot air removing components, board has slight warp) and have full image but few horizontal lines on the screen. Some of the lines appears to be 2 pixel tall while others are 1 pixel tall.
                • Disconnecting left and right buffer board potentially reveals problems on both sides with different signals (unless this T-Con require jumper like Samsung FB_TRDY1&3) Fault
