• MSI Tomahawk B550 no beep

I have a Tomohawk B550 that die suddenly. No BSOD, no weird sign or no POST/boot just a day before it happened. Fans are spinning, BIOS had flashed several times, CMOS cleared, battery removed, etc. CPUs--5600 and 3700X were tested working on 3 other boards--Aorus X570/Auros B550M-Pro-P/TUF X570, so as the PSUs--RM650x/HX650 , as well as the DRAMs, all components are tested working. The only indicator it show was DRAM LED kept lit up, no beep. The same symptom also happen on my 9 years old TUF X99 board but thats another topic, probably due to age.

Today I bring out the board to check...

I was happily tidy up the messy cable behind and suddenly the amp went POP and shut down! looks well I didn't fix the problem cause it have the exact same symptom as before--shutdown immediately when I tried to switch it on with remote or thru front input selection.

Opened it up and again, loose solder connection. this time is the connection straight from the transformer. I wiggle the connector and it turn on, a slight move cause a short with spark. I took apart and re-solder the connection but unfortunately, it didn't wake up as before. I was sure...

I guess you are right, a capacitor with that rating probably do nothing but filter noise. should be there to filter some high frequency that might affect the tuner, same goes to the rubber/plastic cover.

Don't have a capacitance meter so can't check. I took everything apart and so some cleaning here and there, and it Works! the LCD display brightness is uneven though, for a 23 years old device, I guess this is acceptable. Just see how much dust had rested on its Amp counterpart. and it still work without any issues.

    Thanks for...

That should be the one. other than the safety cert, KC103P is the only other marking, nothing at the back. Can't seems to find loose quantity on this cap, the only one listed on ebay is 25 QTY. I wonder if I can replace it with other make with "103" rating?

Thanks, I suppose these website required min quantity and usually in dozens to hundreds. add in postage, it may cost more than my >20 years old tuner itself.

hope to find it in my local shop....

Looks like the cap lookalike is encase in silicone/rubber, shield from transformer heat?

ok, remove the rubber cover. I have no idea what is this.
Please guide me, like how to read the marking. also the black rectangular box which I guess its a transformer....

just FYI, if you have desktop PC, the molex connector will output +12V DC from yellow wire. Typical car audio head unit shouldn't draw more than 100W. or to be safe, remove all PSU connector from devices and short Green to any black ground wires on the ATX24 connector.Re: Help With Troubleshooting Car Stereo (Speaker) Problem

I will try to de-solder it and see if theres marking.
This thing is quite old, from 1990, I hope its still in one piece after I remove it. lol.

WOW! Didn't expect the Pre/Power from HK can have such a shabby job in soldering.
MaxxArcade is a true expert, Hes way above my noob level. I'm like a elementary student watching a lecture by a professor.

Seems like most big brands with mass production lines are affected. and I thought they made better electronic stuff back then. then again, at least there's a way to fix if they gone bad, unlike the LSI circuit boards today.

It does, but due to the one of ribbon cable was removed, the Amp card wouldn't work so no output to speaker.

The good news is I finally make it work by re-solder one of the transistor--an IC, Linear Regulator, KIA7905PI. It was loose, turn out to be bad soldering/connect, this might had shorted the Video boards.

With the videos boards removed and that 7905 transistor re-solder, it finally work! I'm keeping my fingers crossed, hope it stay that way until I find a reason to upgrade.

    Thanks again...

Follow up on my finding, gonna need your expertise again.

I took everything apart again. with all cables connected except the 2 ribbon cables, I inserted the card one by one, seems like some cards need other to be install before the amp will switch on. like the digital I/O card alone will prevent switch on unless the analog I/O card is also inserted. all went well until the video I/O cards--both S-Video and Composite--inserted, the amp would switch off. I then reconnect the ribbon cables, this time, only the right cable will trip....

That looks like some major work for me. XD

I will give it a try, nothing to lose if I mess it up anyway.

    Thanks for the replies, appreciated

    Re: Marantz SR5300

I tried that before, either one will trip the amp to switch off.
I will try measuring the DC voltage, what value should I get from them?

    Marantz SR5300

Got an old Marantz SR5300 receiver. It will switch off almost immediately after I switch on with remote controller. The LED is solid red and not blinking. I remove all add on cards and left only the main board, still the amp switch off. by removing the 2 ribbon cables, the amp stay on with display and I'm able to switch inputs, of course, theres no input but I can hear a click between inputs.

I suspect its the transistor that cause the problem but I really don't know how to check. they are SPA16P and SPA16N,...

You mean the it wasn't the input/signal board but the power supply rail feeding the board? in that case, replacing the board won't solve the issue, am I right?

Thanks tom66, the board looks exactly the same as mine, guess I should just get a replacement instead of trying to troubleshooting with my little knowledge in electronic.

just asking, what do you think is causing the problem?Re: Hitachi plasma 42" 42PD9500TA

I posted this in A guide to fixing/troubleshooting some common plasma TV problems 5 days ago but get no reply. I hope the moderator allow me to make a new thread.

Since then, I had changed the capacitor to new cap but it seems the fault wasn't lie in the PSU, at least not that particular cap. although the coil noise is quite loud.

I one by one disconnect every connectors I can find and finally found the culprit. it is the one on the top right corner, sec from right--the longer...

  • Re: A guide to fixing/troubleshooting some common plasma TV problems

    Greeting everyone.

Have a Hitachi plasma 42" 42PD9500TA, got it in Dec 2006. Not the best plasma even in its day but I love the way it scale 4:3 signal on 16:9.

This had been running almost non stop since 2006 with 12hours or more everyday. but today it suddenly switch itself off, I turn it back on with remote and it switch off again after an hour, then half an hour, gradually it switch almost immediately...
