    VM60P-HDTV10a

    Hi,

I have a 60 inch hdtv from vizio bought in 2007 and, there is no picture but I have sound. I called vizio support and they said because I don't see a back light my tv is no good and they said they dont have a part to fix it. He said my tv is done. Any Suggestions??

    Thanks so much,

Like most of the LG-based TVs from this era, you either have a bad Y-Sus or Z-Sus IPM (under the large heat sinks) - most likely a bad Y-Sus. You'll have to open the TV to accurately diagnose the issue.

Edit: Please post pics of the back of the TV with the cover removed. Also, do you have a digital multimeter?

A clear pic of the whole board layout would be great. Also, please post a picture of your multimeter. I'll share more details after the pics are posted - don't want to confuse you.

Ok, I'm going to leave this info here for you:

I've attached a few pics based on how I think your boards look. Ignore the panel "V" voltage checks I've marked on the pics for now. Also, ignore the second multimeter pic, since it references the "V" voltage checks. First, we'll want to check the fuses with the TV unplugged. The big board with the large black metal fins on the far left and big board with similar fins on the far right are the Y-Sustain and Z-Sustain, respectively. Do the following to test their fuses:

              (1) Plug your probes into the multimeter and set your meter to the continuity setting as shown in the first multimeter pic.
              (2) Place your black probe on one end of a fuse and your red probe on the other end of the fuse. You should see 0.5 ohms or less.
              (3) Repeat this test for the other Y-Sus fuse and the Z-Sus fuse.

If you encounter a fuse that doesn't meet the 0.5 ohms or less spec, that is your problem board. Let me know where you've found a problem fuse.

Ok I tried to do what you said but the only thing that makes me think that I am doing it wrong is because the multimeter is showing the battery is dead and it is showing a -1.

I had to update this post, because the info I provided initially was incorrect. Ok, I have the same meter as a spare, and it acts kind of weird, too. It shows "-1" at first then it shows an actual reading if you hold your probes long enough on the fuse; you should see somewhere around 1.0. For some reason, it doesn't drop below 1.0 on my meter. As long as you're not seeing "1" on the meter to the far left of the lcd display, your fuse should be ok.

I called vizio again and this person said the part that controls the gas is out and usually unfixable. I have called 2 of there repair places and they dont deal with this tv anymore.

"part which controls the gas is out"? Did you accidentally dial into a boiler repair service? "usually unfixable" that is grade-A baloney there...

He said there is gas that runs in between 2 pieces of glass.

Can you give me any hope or ideas?

LOL. I agree with Tom - odd diagnosis. I highly doubt your screen is bad. Did all of your fuses show "1" (both the Y-Sustain and Z-Sustain)? The Y-Sus is the board in the second pic of post 7, and the Z-Sus is the board in the 3rd pic of post 7. It's important that we know accurately which board has the bad fuse(s), as that's the board on which we'll want to focus.

Edit: I got a free 50" plasma from a guy whose TV was totally misdiagnosed by a repair company. I had it up and running in a few days.

If your readings are indeed accurate then you have a bad Y and a bad Z. I've personally never seen both go bad at the same time, so you may want to remove the fuses and test them out of the TV.

It is rare for these 60" TVs to blow the IPMs as they used older versions that were more rugged. The 42" and 50" munch through them like candies though.

It's typical for the IPM modules under the large heat sinks with fins to blow in older LG-based plasma TVs. Since Tom says this is rare in 60" TVs, you may have to do some further testing (or recruit your friend ) to confirm whether the IPMs are indeed faulty; some other component could be bad. Buying used Y-Sustains that utilize IPM modules is an iffy proposition, as they could die at any time. Also, it appears that the board you need is scarce:

This may help - the IPM may not match yours, though: http://blog.coppelltvrepair.com/2011...s-ipm-for.html
