Bad plasma panel; not economically repaired. Shockingly common with these models (B450 thru E450.)

Hey Tom. Just tore apart a 51" E450 series with a broken screen. First Plasma I've seen with tab bonds. That being the case I think it's feasible that one of these with vertical lines could be a bond issue. Any opinion? Here's a pic from the one I tore down.

Basically the X buffers are permanently attached to the screen.

Interesting, that's new... I suppose it's only time since they started doing that. Most older panels, including the previous year D450 use connectors. Interestingly, I don't see any heatsinking either. The X drivers really do need heatsinks, wonder if this is the reason Samsung panels seem to fail more especially a lot of the E and F series panels.

However, it's still a panel issue. Attached to those ribbons are driver chips, which fail, causing the lines. The diagnosis would be identical for an LCD with same symptoms. The only real difference is plasma uses around 60V for those drivers, whereas LCD uses around 15V. Plasma X drivers are under a lot more stress and tend to fail more often, though overall plasma panels (as a unit) are more reliable than LCDs due to tab bond issues affecting LCDs a lot more. Wonder if we'll see plasmas with tab bond problems soon, though...

I figured you in particular would find this interesting. I was kind of disappointed to see it. Going to lead to tons more ending up in the trash. There were heat sinks on the board that I already removed. Hence exposing the tab bonds.

Whole reason I brought this up. I fixed another Vizio with nearly identical symptoms to this with tab bond problems. Had 4-5 single pixel width lines.

Actually now you say it I do remember a Panasonic 2012 plasma using tab bond style connections too for the X drivers. I think as long as heat does not present a problem the tab bonds should be fine, but the fact that tab bond issues are still regularly seen on modern LCD panels worries me. The X driver boards are very simple and really very rarely fail, the X driver chips themselves almost always fail first.

I got a similiar Samsung plasma, same issue, thought it should be the x tab bond problem. When I took out of the iron cover against the x board, found the board permanently attached to the panle! and tried to check the tab bond, after a while, I heard a lod sound, one ic burned out. You know what, this was because the iron cover is the heatsink! without it, the ic was overheated. So never do what I did for long time.

Yes, they really need to be heatsinked or they will fail within short order.

Well I can tell you from working in an authorised Samsung service centre that not only do some of these panels have the X buffers bonded like this, but some of the replacement service panels I had also had the Y buffers bonded to the panel, eliminating any chance of replacing a buffer board :O

Really? Not surprising nowadays I suppose... Luckily Y-buffer failure is rare today, but it can still happen due to Y-main fault...

Hey Tom, I have an LG 60PS11 With a similar problem but I think the lines are little thinner and sometimes totally go away (as long as there's no blue in the picture - if it's dark blue lines, the lines are almost black and are extremely pronounced). Could it possibly be a buffer board? Or do you think it's the display. Is it anyway I can upload for you a picture or 2?

Do you think the problem with the heatshink transferred over to the Led Samsungs as well?

LED Samsung sets don't use heatsinks for the drivers. They really should, but they don't. In fact I've only encountered heatsinks on LCD drivers very infrequently, only once on one very old LCD panel.

Unfortunately thin individual failed lines on any display, doesn't matter if it's plasma, LCD or OLED, it is essentially always a bad panel.

Hey guys, I'm being offered an LG 50PG10 plasma with a vertical line running down the screen.

Apparently, if you give the TV a good smack on the frame above the line, it will go away for a while.

Does this sound like a bad solder joint or loose ribbon cable? Or a bad panel? If it's not likely to be a bad panel I will likely pick it up.

                                  What do you guys think?

                                  Thanks...

                                  Hi.

Got UE58TU7100K with no picture - backlight comes on though. Figured out that's a perfect candidate for cut tape method.

This model has just one LVDS tape coming off main board - and two panel boards underneath the LCD screen are connected to each other via small tape. Like curved screens. I've tried to disconnect half of the screen (5he side without LVDS connector on it, obviously), no joy.

Disconnected the tape (main board side). Applied a small piece of tape, covering first ~4-5 pins. Powered the TV on - got picture. In negative, but that's...

My Panasonic Plasma model P55VT50 has started displaying "interference" on just the left half of the screen only (left when facing the screen). Sometimes it's concentrated in about the first 30 seconds after startup, then disappears. Other times it's fine at startup and then randomly does it later on. When it flashes the interference it's very quick and doesn't stay on the screen unless it flashes repeatedly in a row.

This image is a screen shot from a video I took. This is an example of the interference at its worst. Often the interference is much smaller...
