I am thinking about buying a JVC SP55M-C for my sister. How is the build quality and reliability of JVC?

Re: JVC reliability/ build quality
Older, JVC-made sets: Superb, on par with Toshiba/Sharp.
Newer, rebadged sets: Pieces of overpriced crap. Please do not PM me with questions! Questions via PM will not be answered. Post on the forums instead!

Re: JVC reliability/ build quality
I have a 42" JVC LCD TV (about 6 years old) that works well. I also had a JVC tube TV for over 10 years that worked flawlessly until I gave it away. It doesn't seem like there are very many JVC models being manufactured anymore. As you most likely noticed, there aren't any reviews on that TV model (at least, I couldn't find any), so I wouldn't touch it. I'd personally go with a more popular brand and known decent-to-good quality set: Panasonic, LG, etc.Last edited by capkid; 07-19-2013, 12:02 PM.Comment

Re: JVC reliability/ build quality
I looked at the model, it's a new one. You should be aware most modern JVCs are now made by AmTRAN -- the same company that makes most modern Vizios. Therefore, expect the same mediocre build quality: superb power supply but rubbish unreliable main board.
EDIT: to confirm it, here's the manual: on page 5 it says "AmTRAN" so it's just a rebadge.
So this looks to be the equivalent Vizio http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/p...=baynoteSearch around $140 cheaper compared to http://www.amazon.com/electronics/dp/B00BDRDUJW with same input jacks & feature set.
JVC eat up ~$140 in margin per TV sold! Wow. No wonder rebadging is so popular.Last edited by tom66; 07-19-2013, 12:17 PM.Please do not PM me with questions! Questions via PM will not be answered. Post on the forums instead!

Re: JVC reliability/ build quality
I know it is too late to help this person but I needed to warn anyone that was thinking of buying this tv to stay away. It is not made by JVC inside boards are labeled AmTran. My daughter's TV SP55M-C sound stopped working after her warranty was over. Parts are hard to find.Comment

by DXseekerMOHello everyone!
Recently I've noticed that some ShopJimmy backlight strips don't have double-sided tape installed upon them when an application calls for it, and I must purchase the tape separately. In a recent chat conversation with a customer service agent I told them if this tape wasn't applied when it was called for I would begin to consider ordering my backlight strips elsewhere. It looks like this time may have come.
I recently got a TCL 65S4 with bad backlights. After looking at the SJ listing here: https://www.shopjimmy.com/tcl-jl-d65...365as-m-led-ba...Yes0%1All backlight strips are the same quality0%1No0%0 -
by momakaFor today's thread, I have a KingWin ABT-650MM ATX PSU. Official web page with the PSU specs is still up and can be found here:
http://www.rmac.kingwin.com/products.../abt_650MM.asp
I just can't help it when I see a broken / for parts PSU on eBay that's listed for cheap and looks at least somewhat interesting. Well, OK, I won't lie – on the outside, this PSU looks anything but interesting. It's a plain gray box with colorful “spaghetti cables”.
What mostly drew me into buying it is its 2x PCI-E power connectors... -

by momakaMore Lo-Fi speakers and another DIY surround repair.
The patient this time: a pair of Philips F9217L-50R speakers from a budget Philips rack/component system from the '80's. The system belongs to my brother in-law… or actually his parents. However, they didn't want it when they moved houses and he liked it anyways, so he ended up keeping it. It's a pretty cool-looking vintage system with a wood/veneer cabinet and shelves for records and cassettes. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to take a picture of it or get the model #'s (but maybe next time I visit, if anyone is curious?)

by momakaBoston Acoustics fans, this thread might not be for you.
A few years back (~2018 time frame), I picked up a set of free JVC speakers from someone on Craigslist that no one seemed to be interested in. The guy also had a single Boston Acoustics HD8 speaker – yes, just one cabinet. He said he had no idea where he got this one from or why it's only by itself. But like the JVC speakers, it was going to get tossed at the end of that week… so I came to collect, as usual. And that's all I know about this HD8. After all, I figured why not take it and see what's inside… show it to the...
