    help with 42v7 plasma tv

    hello
I have been given a faulty 42v7 plasma tv and i was hoping i could repair it with minimal cash spent as I'm a bit poor at the moment

the cause of the fault is the owner tried to adjust the set up /set dwn whilst the cover was still on he said there was a spark and it switched off.

i took the cover of to find that he had shorted a cap to the case
as there was large mark on the cap.

so i replaced the cap and the blown fuse on the ysus board
and the tv will switch on then off after a couple of seconds
I disconnected the ysus board and the tv will switch on,
so i don't think anything other than the ysus board is damaged
i don't have the funds to buy a new board so would prefer to replace components.

please could some one direct me on how to find the faulty components

    Kind regards
    Mike.

There is a chance the module under the heatsink is bad. This is the IPM. Replacement is difficult, so if it is at fault then a new board may be the only option.

First, can you check the resistance, in ohms, between VS and GND, on the Y-sus?

      thanks
i just checked it shows 1 ohms on my cheap dmm.
so does this mean the chip is fried?

It is very likely. While other faults are possible, the IPM is the most common.

If you visit the local dump often, broken (smashed) 42V5~42V8 based plasmas are dumped almost every day. You may be able to harvest the board from that.

The IPM is around £20~£30, replacement requires a high power soldering iron though.

          thanks
the tip by me don't let you take anything of site
what wattage iron would you recommend as i will try do desolder and replace the IPM
before i try to source a replacement board.

It is really not practical without a desoldering gun which will cost you more than one Y-sustain board.

I have managed to de-solder the IPM.
so i will order a new one sometime next week
hopefully it will solve my problem.

Match the model # on IPM when ordering.
Before you order, re-measure the VS to GND resistance and check that it is now open.

VS to GND is now open

                    my IPM is STK795-811a 6IBLN
but i can only find the STK795-811a 6IBDK

would it be ok to use this one?
or do i have to have exact match?

That should be fine as a replacement goes. You will also need fresh thermal paste.

I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

                          Assuming...

                          Problem

This is an LG edge LED lit LCD Display. The LEDs are on the bottom edge of the display. There are 2 bars (left and right) Each bar has many LEDs and a 6 pin connector. Each pin drive several LEDs thus is the highest current flow / heat junction. The weak lead free solder gradually fails with thermal expansion/contraction cycling and increases resistance. PSU will compensate up to a point, then when the current is too high, PSU just shut down the backlight causing a dark display. I have even seen one which the connector just fell off as solder points became completely detached....

Normally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow. But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though. I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

                          Hi everyone!
I happened several times, in the search for help from the web, to consult this very interesting forum.
So I decided to sign up and I intend to participate actively by making available my knowledge and experience on the subject, I'm a new user but at the same time I'm old in the sense that I have 4 decades of experience in repairing and designing electronics but above all I'm a great passionate about the subject.

Having said that I come to the gist of my post on the forum as the title suggests.
For my passion for technology I'm now collecting several...
