Be careful out there folks (ebay scam)

I recently purchased an N7KE main board for a Sanyo DP52449-01 that I'm working on through eBay. A package arrived today and when I opened it, I immediately knew it wasn't an N7KE main board. It wasn't even for a DP52449. The listing said "No Refunds" because you should know what you're ordering, yada, yada, yada. So I opened a claim against the seller through eBay's Buyer Protection Policy. Shortly after, I received a phone call from the seller saying that he went to refund me the money but PayPal had already taken it from him and refunded it to me, so I could close the case against him. I checked my email and my PayPal account and saw that there had been no refund, so I told him that when I got word from eBay that I would close the case. He said he would look into it and call me back. He called me back a little later and said that he had refunded the money and asked me again to close the case. Again, I told him I would as soon as I saw the email.

At this point, his story changed. He told me that he would send the money if I would close the case and that I could keep the board. I told him one more time, "I will close the case when I see the refund, period." To which he told me to F*ck off and hung up on me.

His whole game was trying to get me to close the case, at which point, I would have no way to get my money back. I have to wait until the 3rd of June to escalate my case against him. At which point I will also leave appropriate feedback.

Do not close any eBay cases against fraudulent sellers until you are satisfied with the results. You can't go back.

You do have a last resort, which will really piss off PayPal. If you pay via credit card, call up your card company and state that you wish to reverse a transaction (chargeback.) PayPal will quickly side with you if your case has even the slightest whiff of merit. This is probably the only good reason for getting a credit card IMO (such as a prepaid card)... you can't easily do this with debit cards or bank accounts.

It can earn you bad marks with both PayPal and eBay though, so you should avoid doing it too often.

Make sure you leave the guy negative feedback; he doesn't sound like a particularly pleasant seller.

I just got an email that the seller has refunded my full payment and the case has been closed. I verified it through my PayPal account. I will still be leaving him negative feedback, the 'F' bomb was completely unnecessary. There goes his 100% positive rating.

So I wonder how much he has played this trick and if his 100% feedback is earned the same way.

He only has 157 feedback points. Makes me think he starts a new account when he gets negative feedback.

Yeah, I'd still leave negative feedback, also. I'd maintain the diplomatic, objective tone you've shown when you post the negative so you don't come across as whiny and impossible to please to other buyers.

I have a poor rating on eBay and I wouldn't even do that

I bet he didn't even know what board he had, he was probably looking at the printed # on the PCB and googled that #, and not the tuner sticker #.

I stopped using Ebay for parts entirely, too many scammers. Ebay doesn't offer adequate protections for lost time and profits. The run around is not worth it for me personally.

I've had good luck with Ebay. I do usually try to go with those that give a 90-180day waranty.
