SONY KE-42TS2U can see menu but no picture

    Hi all,

After a lightning storm I have no picture on this TV. I can get the menu to show on the screen but it indicates that there is no signal into the TV even when i switch to any type input source. Any ideas on which parts i need to replace? I have never worked on a TV before but consider myself to be handy repairing things.

    Thanks for all suggestions.

This fault is going to be on the main board.
Other things to check are other inputs, if you have for example tried only HDMI try analog inputs and vice versa.

Re: SONY KE-42TS2U can see menu but no picture

I have tried several different input sources and all I tried would not provide a signal. I thought that may mean that I could replace a board that dealt with signal input and that might solve the issue.

Yes, the main board is what deals with the input signal.
Open the set up and take some pictures and we will help you locate the board.

This is a picture with the back off. I guess you need me to take off the metal panel also?

Yes. I have never seen an LCD with a shield like that over the electronics! Is this a plasma HDTV?

Yes it is a 42" Flat Panel Color HDTV (Plasma WEGAâ„¢) Anything to be careful of when taking off the shield?

High voltage present inside -- make sure set is unplugged for at least 5 minutes before going further.

Can we get a closer shot of these capacitors? They do not look healthy.

The problem is likely below the capacitors (main board assembly), however, the capacitors being bad could conceivably cause issues with the main board.

Hmm, they look OK to me. Bulging would be evident around the seal -- it would be leaking or broken.
So, can you easily remove that shield off the board below those capacitors? The main board is under there.

Those caps are bad. Replace them before going further. wouldn't hurt to replace all of them on that board.

I'm of the opinion they're not bad, but if you want to swap them, you will need to use a soldering iron; heat each leg one after another, while gently pulling on the capacitor.
As far as the main board goes, is there a separate area for the video inputs? It looks like that just connects to them somewhere?

Right, so it looks to me like that board handles the various video inputs somewhat separately and then feeds it in to the main board below those mentioned capacitors. (Input multiplexing.)

It would be unlikely that all of the input multiplexing would fail at once, so I'm going to say that the fault most likely resides on the main board.

                                          Hello everyone,

I got a 58pus7805 that shows some weird behavior.
The menu and remote work fine and the picture is looking crisp and flawless while navigating the menu.
However, when a video source is displayed the screen either goes solid green (HDMI), solid black (SAT TV) or shows some fragments on mostly green background (AVI Playback from USB).

Sony XBR-85X950G Gray horizontal lines and vertical picture shift diagnosis?

5.5 year old 85 inch Sony Bravia X950G started showing gray horizontal lines across the bottom of the screen and the picture shifts slightly vertically when it happens. The lines sometimes get bigger/smaller vertically and bounce back. See the video for the problem. It seems to be happening after it warms up after an hour or so. Happens regardless of source. Right now there's nothing but power cable connected and it's happening.
