LCD Flex Foil Repair - Is it possible?

Hi. New here - first thread, second post.

So I go to fix this TV for a customer - a Samsung LE40C750 - beautiful machine. 3D 1080p, with all the bells and whistles. It has faint vertical coloured lines down the right hand side so I figure bad T-con or dirty contact on the ribbon cables connecting the T-con to the screen drivers. Wrong on both counts.

Then the customer shares with me that they had cleaned the screen with windolene - spraying the liquid straight onto the screen and scrubbing it vigorously with a cloth (some people shouldn't be allowed to buy TVs).

Now this model is unusual in that it has the T-con board and the screen drivers at the bottom of the TV. So I surmise that when scrubbing the screen, windolene has dripped down through the gap created when he was pressing down hard with the cloth and has somehow polluted the 'Anistropic Conductive Film' (ACF) connecting the flex foils to the LCD and screen driver board creating horizontal conduction between particles resulting in some short circuits . These particles are about the width of a single one of those coloured lines you can see when the TV is on.

I have thought about reheating them but I don't know at what temperature is safe nor precisely how long to do that for. I really want to know if there is any way I can replace the ACF. Appreciating that it would be an extremely precise procedure that is usually achieved by carefully calibrated machines at the factory.

Has anybody ever tried this? Is it within the realm of possibility? What do you think?

What has probably happened is it has damaged the IC on the flex itself, so I wouldn't think it is repairable. The tabs are at the bottom (the LCD is just mounted upside down) because of so many overheating problems with them but it does mean they are susceptible to water damage. Ordinary water would do this too.
Please do not PM me with questions! Questions via PM will not be answered. Post on the forums instead!

      Thanks for the response Tom66.

Hm, the flex ICs, didn't even think of that.

I did also have the thought that it might clear up when it dried out since the customer said the lines were more pronounced and numerous and tightly packed when it first happened and since then they have faded to the point that you can see the picture through and between them. Only it doesn't seem to be getting any better for a while and I'm sure it must be bone dry by now which is why I thought of the ACF.

Regardless of how this one ends up, I still think replacing ACF is a thread that should be kept going as it's like the elusive 'Holy Grail' of TV techs.

        Hi Reconvision,

Sorry for asking different question in this thread.

I have LE46C750, similar to what you have now but 46" screen. This TV has suddenly stopped working, then No PWR, No STBY, No Sound. Removed back cover off, had a look at PCBs and found burnt SMT FET-SOT23 (IC1014) which is right on the top side of the power connector on the main board (BN41-01423B/BN94-03388F).

Disconnected main board from power board, turned mains ON then backlight ON.

Please could you let me know that particular FET part number/marking on it? I would be very grateful to you if you can please share any generic problems with this board causing power failure, blowing that FET and any schematics.

        Many Thanks

              Problem

This is an LG edge LED lit LCD Display. The LEDs are on the bottom edge of the display. There are 2 bars (left and right) Each bar has many LEDs and a 6 pin connector. Each pin drive several LEDs thus is the highest current flow / heat junction. The weak lead free solder gradually fails with thermal expansion/contraction cycling and increases resistance. PSU will compensate up to a point, then when the current is too high, PSU just shut down the backlight causing a dark display. I have even seen one which the connector just fell off as solder points became completely detached....

iphone XS turns off when press on screen.
              by smic717394
              Hi,

I have a iphone XS that came in for a screen replacement, the screen was badly cracked, and inside missing scues, on the back of the screen still the blue protector, the screen was a LCD. So we replaced the screen and all good, installed the screen and we noticed that pressing the screen with a bit of force but not excessive, the phone dies. After plugging the charger it turns back on, but again if you press it it dies. I open the phone again, and I can't see anything major, with the phone open, if I press on the logic board, battery, charging board, or even putting pressure on...
