    Re: Toshiba 42HL67US blows fuses.

That sounds like some kind of mains surge could have damaged the TV. Also some generators can put out too high of a voltage if the load is suddenly removed.

Measure the capacitor with a ruler, then we can suggest replacements, cost should be less than $10 total.

Tell your dad to have some load connected to the generator output all the time, 100W lamp will be good. The regulation of the generator is very slow and the output voltage can swing wildly when it first comes on with no load.

                  Re: Toshiba 42HL67US blows fuses.

Good point. For better reliability, may be best to pick this one:
                  http://www.digikey.com/product-detai...1616-ND/483214
(it would only affect the reliability in future.)

Oh, and check the lead spacing will fit too.

Excellent to hear. Tell your Dad to heed the advice about the generator -- next time it might not be so easy!
And this should be a clue to others as to why we insist on pictures of the actual boards (not stock pics) -- otherwise the bad cap may not have been spotted!

Testing the board for shorts doesn't take very long and is super easy. For any board, I can generally do it in less than 5 minutes.

Finding the short, however, is a different matter. Murphy says it was always be the last component you desolder that is shorted.

For a 19 inch Dell lcd computer monitor, there is a short on the logic board. I looked at the 20 or so small caps and I decided not to even bother trying.

As we always stress, pictures of your boards matter. There have been a few self proclaimed "professionals" that think there is no sense posting a picture of the board even when we ask nicely. Another easy thread to hit close window and move on.
