    LG lg52lb5d HDTV picture problem

I have had this tv for about a year now, and during my last deployment my wife said it started having problems with the picture, the colors are very distorted, with no visible lines or anything. Well about two days after she told me it corrected itself. It did this two more times, well now it has done it again, and it wont fix itself. I opened the set up and noticed there are two or three blown caps on the main board, but would that cause picture issues? I thought that would cause power issues?

I have attached two pictures that kind of capture the visual problems.
    Thanks for the help!!

are the caps on the main board or power supply? if you are getting ripple on the caps or the powersupply is out of spec it could cause problems. change them out and see. i have fixed totally dead sets with a single cap change.

Re: LG lg52lb5d HDTV picture problem

Sorry I am new to tv repair. I have been repairing computers for awhile so i thought i would give tv's a shot. Is the main board the board with the all the inputs(a/v inputs)? Because the board I have found bad caps on had no inputs and its large next to the one with the inputs, i cannot put pics up tonight, because i needed to reassemble it to move it.

you are proballt talking about the powersupply, rule of thumb if the power plug goes there then it is usually power supply.

I looked up the internals of a generic lg tv, it appears i would be talking about the powersupply. So that could cause picture problems eh? I may have to order some caps here for it. Are you able to see the problem with the pictures i posted, i thought it might be kind of hard to tell what exactly im talking about, its almost like a cloud over it. But very distorted colors also.

do you have a voltmeter to check voltage out on power supply? they should be marked eg. 3.3, 5, 12 etc. it could be another problem but most likley it is voltage related. tom66 or bud m could probally answer better than me, but i always go to the voltages first.the thing about caps is the fact they dont always bloat or rupture, they can fail and give no visual indication. i use a peak 70 esr meter to identify the bad ones. it paid for itself in time saved on repairs on several sets. when tom gets here he can probally tell you more than me but i would guess caps causing ripple or lower than normal voltage.

Most modern multimeters do not require a working fuse in order to measure voltage.

However, you do require a working fuse in order to measure current. Measuring current is something the regulars rarely ask people to do.

Its a fluke multimeter when i went was measuring current on a alternator i went over the limit of the fuse, it will not read anything now. I will try again.

Thanks for all the input so far! I really appreciate it!

i overlooked to mention you need the ground on the metal case and the power supply connected as working state. be carefull around the heatsinks they can be live.

Fluke fuses will cost anywhere between $6 and $12 each.

It sounds like you blew the 10A fuse. Most Flukes will read up to 20A for less than 30 seconds before blowing.

For car work, you may want to consider a DC clamp.

PS. Which Fluke model do you have?

Ill check the model of my dmm when i get to work. I have a dc clamp i just need it mailed to me.

Anything else i should check while i have it open?

I plan to replace the known bad capcitors and check power supply voltages.

look for any obvious signs of burned components, you may find the problem is with the caps.

Hi guys! I realized you have a lot of knowledge here so i am hoping you could point me in right direction with my odd issue.

The Tv is a Philips 58PUS8545/12, it had no picture but working backlights.

                                Original T-con:
Opened the Tv and tested to unplug one ribbon cable at a time. With this test i could see that i got fine picture on both halves as long as there was only one ribbon cable connected, with two connected picture were gone.

                                First replacement T-con:

I thought it might be t-con and ordered new t-con from china(supposedly tested)...

Saved this beast from the landfill this weekend.
                                Manfactured July 2013 in Mexico.

I love working on plasma TVs.
Its been a while but I was lucky enough to find 2 this week.

The TV powers on and stays on but no picture. Havent checked for sound yet.
No bulging caps although the insides are pretty dusty and the boards are discolored from many years of high heat.
                                Will start troubleshooting tonight.

I think the problem is the panel, but before send it to trash, i would like to get a second opinion.

                                Thanks in advance.

The original symptom was power cycling after 3-4 seconds with a single red light flash.

To remedy this I went through and unplugged each component 1x1 and discovered that when the FFC cables were disconnected the backlights stayed on and the TV did not reboot.

I tried remove one or the other to see which side of the display was causing the issue (expecting to see half a picture to show) but didn't see anything. But the boot loop only appears when the top FFC cable (right side...
