Samsung PS50C6500 no video but sound

Hello, this is my first post just looking for some advice please. After reading another topic here I decided I'd see what any of you guys think regarding my issue.

So my Samsung plasma (PS50C6500) decided to stop working the other day, it boots up, screen flickers and the startup sound can be heard, the screen then goes completely blank. The TV still responds to input from the remote as the light flashes when pressing buttons however no actual TV sound can be heard.

I had a local repair shop take a look at this and they said it was a "main pcb" problem and quoted me £530 to fix it. I have zero experience with messing around with TV's but surely this is over the top? I mean I found this site which offers parts www.bixreclamation.co.uk but if whether or not its actually for my TV and what I need.

I can provide more info if requested later as they're dropping my TV off, figured I'd take it back and recycle it rather than them selling parts on. I'll be sure to ask for a more detailed response as to what exactly has gone as well.

£530 to repair? For a 1080p 50" plasma, which you could buy new for under £570?
I do wonder what these guys smoke! Perhaps they'd be willing to share some? :P

Ask for a picture from the supplier first.

That other site is fine, £70 for all boards isn't bad! If you want to take less of a risk swapping all of them. The board with the SCART, HDMI etc. is the main board (or "main PCB" if you like)

You can install this using just a screwdriver.

However I'd advise you do some testing first to eliminate any other boards as faulty. You should only need a multimeter and digital camera to do this, we can guide you through. First, please post some pictures of the TV's guts -- clear and in focus, and uploaded using manage attachments feature, below the post entry. I have slow internet here, so I like to look at the pictures one by one.

Hey, thanks for getting back so fast, impressed.

I just rang them up and this time they've said that the screen is faulty and they've tried different parts, so now I don't know if its the main board or the screen it's self. The guy tried to knock off £60 but still said I would rather keep the set, for £480 could buy a pretty good replacement but not as if I have that lying around :p

They also said the TV won't be returned for a few days now so unfortunately I won't be able to take those picture just yet, apologies.

At any rate I appreciate the help and will update when possible.

Absolute bullcrap. I am sorry to offend any genuine TV technicians out there (who don't lie to customers), but they are lying through their ass and this unfortunately seems all too common in the service/repair industry.

If the screen flickers (on a Samsung plasma) it's good, period. No argument. Unless you have stuck vertical lines -- but even then you'd still get a picture, just with the lines on it. (In this case, and also if the glass is cracked, you need to replace the plasma panel, but otherwise, you're good.)

Samsung plasmas have a very nice built in diagnosis feature which will allow you to eliminate the plasma panel and driver boards from the question. You can put a jumper across two pins on the control board (inside the TV) and it will show a test pattern (or cycle test patterns.) This would confirm a main board fault.

I just hope they don't do what one TV repair company did -- to sabotage the set by removing the power supply and not telling the customer!

The main board is a very common failure on Samsung TVs.

as tom66 said just hope they dont sabotage it in some way ie messing with voltage adjustments etc as your no longer getting it repaired there also hope they dont rip you of on there time spent looking at it for you.most shops are genuine though you just get the bad one from time to time.

Yea I didn't think it could be the screen as they suggested, since it flickered and I read on another topic here that it was a good sign. Prior to it failing it was working flawlessly, no lines or anything.

@vinceroger69 I hadn't even considered that, didn't think people could be so malicious, after all I paid them £30 to check it with no further commitment.

I had the TV open myself before I sent it so I'll know if anything is out of place or missing (added image to the attachments), they seemed like nice people when they picked it up. Once its been dropped back off I'll be uploading pictures for you guys to look at, I've attached one I took before it was sent but its bad quality just took it to show friends over Facebook.
I think however I probably will go ahead and try to repair this with the help of you guys, might as well try instead throwing it away.

Great, but please use a camera where we can see clear pictures, as that will be all we have to work from.

Make sure it has the same symptoms as before you sent it to them.

Then you will be able to tell if they have swapped your good parts for crappers they had.

@tom666 Yes of course, I took this quickly on a camera phone as it was what I was using at the time, I have a much better camera available. Just noticed you go to Leeds, that's quite close, small world :P

@gilly1984 I intended to check it the moment they leave, or whilst there if possible depends how fast they want to leave, figured with them being a rather local company that they'd be genuine but we'll see. From Manchester, everyone on here so far seems local.

Hey guys I'm back with an update.

TV finally got dropped not long ago so took some pictures, the images are all OK but I can get a different camera and take more tomorrow see if they are any better. Should be fine they're all in focus, just let me know please and thanks again appreciate the support.

Can we get a picture of the control board? This is the board that the Y-Main, X-Main and main board connect to, it's a little green one.

Apologies but I can't find a small green board, theres 2 long thin green boards along the left and bottom of the TV's edges. I've added a better overall picture of teh TV, if you can point it out I'll take the picture please.

I think it may be under the metal plate beneath the upper white board, not sure can't see, let me know what you think and I'll take it apart more if needed.

I have a feeling it is the one under that metal plate, can you remove that without taking off the stand?

I couldn't get to it at all so had to remove the stand, but its OK the couch assisted me with this, its funny because it only just fits on.

Like I said before if you need better pictures I'll be able to get more tomorrow, these seem ok but they could be better.

OK, get a piece of wire or a hard-disk drive jumper and place it across pins 3 and 4 here. The white numbers are adjacent to the pins.

Disconnect the brown cable between main board and control board. Leave everything else connected.

Power up the TV and see if you get test pattern(s) on the display.

I managed to do as you asked, it did various colours and scrolling patterns, I took a video and put it on Youtube for you.

Excuse the left corner, I had to prop the TV with my foot was the only way to try it asap.

This confirms the fault is with the main PCB/main board.
I would get that kit of boards for £70... you could sell the ones you didn't use for more than that individually on eBay if you are patient.

Cool, think they will be OK? Comparing the images from the one I uploaded and the one on that site it looks identical in regards to the main PCB. The other boards are completely different, so would probably just pass them on as you said.

The main PCB is the one with the HDMI etc on it.

Not the board you just tested.

You have ruled out by doing that test:
- Power supply
- X-Main
- Y-Main
- Y-Buffers
- Control board (the one you put the jumper on)
- X-Distribution Buffers
- Plasma panel

The main (video) board is most likely at fault. So you need to source a compatible replacement for it. Look for the part number -- will be indicated next to "PBA NO" -- we want the "PBA NO" not the "PCB NO".

Right got it.

I looked all over the board and found one mention of it, here is what it said: "BN94-03359A PBA LINE 20100529".

After some searching I found this bn94-03359a, its a bit expensive but its the only one I've found so far.
I've managed to find a similar board on Ebay, but instead of it being a BN94-03359A it says K at the end but it looks exactly like the board on my TV just a different colour Ebay.

What do you think Tom66? Would appreciate your input as I can but the Ebay one with relative ease.
