Samsung PN64D7000 Keeps Power Cycling Never Stays On

Was hoping someone might have some insight into a problem that just started with my Samsung Plasma.

Went to watch it and the following happens:

    1. TV turns on
    2. Smart TV logo appears
    3. TV turns off
    4. Repeated clicking sound from back of TV

    Steps 1-4 repeat.

    Any feedback is appreciated.

When you say smart logo, do you mean the plasma panel is working and displaying an image (albeit brief.)

      Yes, that's correct.

I see the splash screen with the logo and then the HDMI input selection from my receiver which is normal at startup.

      Then the power cycling starts.

Sounds like maybe bad caps, possibly on power board. Have you opened the back?

Or the main board is crashing due to bad firmware. Has an update been attempted?

            Haven't opened the back yet.

As far as firmware, there was an update on 11/22 that hasn't been installed.

Will try to install it now (not sure I can get the screen to stay on long enough to do it though).

Will also post pics when back is removed.

            Thanks for help, much appreciated.

Okay, so I tried to update the firmware. I can only see the menu for about 1 second before the unit turns back off again.

It is probably unwise to attempt to update firmware while TV is not staying powered on. A failed/corrupted firmware update can kill a main board.

                  Yes.

But you have to actually start the upgrade manually. These sets won't do it automatically.

TV doesn't stay on long enough to even click on the menu.

Okay, opened it up and took some photos.

These images are of the main board where the clicking sound is coming from.

The red arrow (in image 0500) is pointing to the approximate location where this sound is coming from.

Not sure if these help. Don't see anything obviously damaged/blown. Then again, I'm not a technician.

Here's an audio file of the clicking/whining noise that's coming from the board after it shuts off.

The pause in between is when the TV is powering back on.

Most likely the main board. Part number BN94-04689C

What makes you think Main Board instead of a Power Supply related problem?

Since this TV is only 18 mos old, I gave Samsung a piece of my mind and they extended the warranty for a 1 time courtesy repair.

Just a little tip for those experiencing similar issues.

Appreciate the help from those who responded to my thread.

Good. It is Samsung's responsibility to fix a fault with a TV this new. However, please let us know what board the technician replaces, if you can find out. If he comes to your home for example to swap it.

                                Will do.

And another quick tip: Don't buy Samsung Smart TV plasma televisions.

I actually have the 51 inch version of this exact TV and within 3 months needed to have both the main board and sound board replaced.

They have some of the poorest reliability records, next to LG. I've done 8 of them! And all but one failure obviously due to cost saving! They are much better than no-name supermarket/retailer brands, but when you can pick up a similar Panasonic, Sony, Toshiba, Sharp etc. for similar money, ALWAYS go for that option.

You say display comes up with 'Smart TV'. Most likely the the panel boards and power board is ok, usually when these are bad you do not get video on the screen before a shutdown.

Bad main boards on Samsung's is a common problem.

Update: The tech came and replaced the Main Board.

Said that if you don't update the software on these things the board can go bad.

                                      Go figure.

                                      Thanks again for everyone's help.
