Re: Baird X47DTV power supply issues

      got my cap today.

I ordered varistors when I should of bought a thermistor.

are they completely different. would check myself but using phone is hard to check out datasheets.

if they are different I will just the old thermistor.

Tom, is a 100w bulb powerful enough to test for shorts using it in series with the psu.

Varistor (MOV) is voltage suppression device: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varistor
        You cannot use that.
For 47" LCD TV, you will need 200 Watts lamps. You can try 100 Watts first.

thanks budm. old thermistor back on then.

stick 2 100w bulbs in series.

if it blows up after all this I will put my head through the screen.

BTW, I only mention tom because he has helped a lot on this tv.

I appreciate all the help from everyone on this site.

Being a bright house tv i'm guessing its a tv mainly in the uk, so i understand if it was tom who contributed here the most.

I still love you all though so dont feel left out

I have no experience with this chassis.... frankly, I don't want any!

It's a Proview chassis. Same crappy chassis as in Polaroid, Memorex et al.

I see what you are talking about. I've seen it before on an LG display (in an LG TV.) It's a temporary effect caused by the TV being off for a long time. Seems to be some settling in the panel due it being cold... not sure what causes it, but mine went away after having it on for an hour.

Pop, spark, not good. Would investigate unless you want to take it apart a month later to find another blown up FET, diode and controller.

                      All screwed up now.

I had a look and couldnt find anything blown? Hoping it was just the surge of power to the new components, all voltages seem good.

Had to get a snap in cap and use some legs off another new cap to join it up.

I may of associated the pop with a spark, so seen a spark even though there was none. must be bonfire night making me go loopy.

May have been the mains switch but I'd keep a careful eye on it. Enjoy your 47"!

My dad has permanently adopted the 50" NEC plasma I fixed. He was supposed to sell it, but he considers it an early birthday present

                        Is this a 1080p or 720p set?

Not sure, not much information about it about.

Gonna guess its a 720p though, just because of the cheap mainboard.

Just put it in the front room now (bye sony 40"), looks no better than watching the last tv, just bigger.

Can't thank you enough tom, a real credit to badcaps.

Just this philips to sort now, bought a new cap for it but that didnt fix it.

Anyway, thats another day, i will update the philips thread when i have the screw drivers out.

                            Quick pic of bodge job.

And the small ruby next to it is what i put in too, original looked very slightly bulged.

Did you glue it down? I would glue it down, then solder (makes it easier.)

I bet you'll find you like the picture on the Sony 40" more, due to the better video processing. My argument with bigger screen sizes ... is to sit closer to the TV. My 24" monitor looks the same as a 32" from 6 feet. etc.

To be honest i couldnt tell the difference in quality between the 37" hannspree we had compared to the 40" sony, now it looks just the same on the 47" Baird, just bigger.

Although i can see a big difference in the menu options. The sony had lots to play with, including auto backlight.

The only time i have seen a major difference on an lcd tv is when i went to a friends of a friends home to fix a pc, she had a Philips tv, it looked like i was watching real life lol, it was weird, maybe it had high hz or something? No idea, i wasnt into tvs at the time.

Oh, high Hz does not make it look better, trust me. I have fixed a Samsung 100 Hz LCD and kept it. We all unanimously agreed to turn off the feature after about 5 minutes; it made everything look fake.

Oh, and no i didnt glue it down, the heatsink is over it, no where for it to move.

Thinking of modding the back to put a 120mm fan inbetween the psus.

No need. It died due to poor 180uF, unlikely to be heat. If you open it up again for service, I would replace that other primary cap on the other PSU.

                                        unhappy.

watching TV this morning just fine, electric ran out and TV went off, put the electric back on and as soon as I did I heard a bang.

opened TV and the fuse has completely shattered.

checked for shorts but it seems fine still.

stupid question here but is it because I used a 2A fuse? and the surge of electric coming back on blew it?

scared to stick another fuse in now.

Test the MOSFET. Did you repair that trace? Cap properly soldered in?

I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

                                            Assuming...

Desoldering gun station modified to use a 18 volt @ 20 amp switching power supply

I have wanting to do this project for quite sometime now and I finally found a switching power supply that will work on this desoldering gun station ZD-915 that the original switching power supply took a shit and just was not worth trying to fix it because this switching power is not quite big enough to handle the heater element and the vacuum pump

One note when I tested the switching power supply and the voltage control board I noticed that this desoldering gun heat up much faster than the original switching power supply which I was really surprised by to the point that I might buy...

Hi, Can we use SMPS Bench Power Supply for Laptop troubleshooting?
                                            by shamsudeen
Hi all, I just need to know that, can i use SMPS type power supply to test and short circuit detection on a laptop motherboard?
I saw 95% of repair guys are using only Linear bench power supply. linear bench power supply is pricy, thats why i planned to get one SMPS supply.

i know that in linear power supply the noise will be very low comparing to SMPS supply....

Definitive technology SC 2000 subwoofer amp's power supply clicking and popping
                                            by JimBanville
The sub developed a constant popping every couple seconds from woofer and power LED flickering with nothing but wall AC connected. Connecting an audio cable didn't change anything. It doesn't play but a second or two of audio in between the pops.
Opened it up and discovered the power supply is making a faint clicking or ticking sound.
I measured the amp's output to the woofer and it pulses up to 50mv DC to be driver. The pulses coincide with the power supply ticking/clicking.
I measured the power supply output going to the amp board and it too has this pulsing. Voltage cycles...

                                            Good day.
I have an AC/DC -> DC PWM (rectifier + 555 buck converter) power supply with MDF11n60, which is getting very hot.
The input is AC from a transformer and the output powers a 24v dc fan. The power supply is used to regulate the speed of the fan.
After several runs on the bench power supply I noticed that the mosfet is reaching 80+C*. The mosfet reads fine on component tester, the thermal paste is changed, the fan is cleaned and with freshly oiled bearings.
When powered directly from the bench psu, the fan takes ~0.7A on 12V. The current consumption is similar...
