Problem was first: TV would not power up. It would appear to be powering up and connecting to a channel only to go dark and power off. The local "parts re-placer" shop said it was the power supply and replaced that. Then they said it was the main board but it was not available to order. When I opened it up the new (?) power supply was not even connected. When I connected it, something smoked in our near the lower transformer. Is it worth trying to get a main board or is it trash?

Is the 'new' power supply new, and is it the correct board number for this model of TV?
They could be right though, there might be a short on the mainboard, which caused this 'new' psu to smoke.Muh-soggy-knee
