Vizio VW42LHDTV10A, no power on, unless power plug pulled.

    Hi guys!
Glad I found this site! A lot of great info here!

    I have a 42" LCD Vizio TV, model #VW42L HDTV10A.
It has recently developed a weird problem.
It will not turn on with the remote control or the side panel power button. The only way I can get this TV to turn on, is by pulling the power cable, re-inserting it and simultaneously pressing the side panel power button. After it is on, it operates in, every way...normal.
The remote will power it off, but not turn it on.
Does this sound like a power supply issue or a main board?

    Thanks
    James

Did the problem suddenly occur, or has it slowly got worse over time (before, only 50% of the time you had to do it, or when it was cold in the room, etc.) and now it is always requiring this trick to turn it on?

Just suddenly started doing this. It's the only way to turn it on now.

Try cleaning the side buttons using some contact cleaner. Maybe a stuck power button is causing issues... Apart from that I would suggest maybe a bad or incorrectly applied firmware update or a loose/dodgy connection/solder joint. Very odd problem there.

          Yep, did that."
That was one of my first guesses. I cleaned the remote and cleaned the unit power button assembly. They were clean to begin with, but I did them anyway.
I'm led to believe it's the power supply. Aren't they dual purpose? Stand by and power on?
Maybe the stand-by function is shot.

I may just order a power supply if I can find one. They seem to be "out-of-stock" everywhere.

Oh, speaking of firmware or firmware gone bad. Whats the best way about getting new firmware installed?

Go onto Vizio's website and if you're lucky there will be a way to do it via USB (does your TV have USB, even service USB port?)

PSU could be at fault, but I can't figure out why the brief power interruption lets it start up.

Couldn't find anything other than the User Manual on Vizio's website.
It does have a service port though, no USB port.

If I plug the power cable in and do not press the power button before 3 seconds pass, it will not start up. Plug power in, press tv power button before 3 seconds or I have to repeat.

                  Quite odd.

The LED is amber when off. It's white when it's on.
The power button on the unit, nor on the remote will power it on unless I do a power cable disconnect, and then within 3 seconds of plugging it back in, press the side panel power button.

Oh yeah, one more thing I left out, sorry about that.
I have to hold the power button for at least 4 seconds before it starts up.

The TV works perfectly once you get it on.

A replacement power supply should be a good starting point?

What if the main board is the issue? After ordering the power supply, you are ready to get the main board also?
I would do budm's bulb test first before I would order another board.
Get some 12V and 24V(or 2x12V) bulbs and connect them on the output connector of the power supply with all the output connectors removed.
You will have to apply 3.2-3.3V to the PS_ON pin to be able to start up the board. If you don't have a 3.3V power source, you can add a 2K ohm resistor from 5V STBY to the PS_ON.
If the bulbs lit up and they stay that way, the power supply is good.
You can also ad a 6V bulb to the 5V STBY position, but not necessary if the Vizio logo comes on.
