Re: Video card MOSFETs crushed... need to replace them?

Oh well, have a GF6800 ultra (or something like this, it was the best possible card from that chip) laying around, wich had suffered a broken vt chip too. I have hard times in googling abouth it, in the end there are some chinese partdistributors who sell this thing. But i never found any datasheet or similar on them. I thought on to replace it with an usuall mosfet, i asume it ins`t that easy withouth datasheet (any short will fore shure kill the card and may be the motherboard too), but from my point of view, this are nothing else than ordinair mosfets, directly chipcased and soldered with a BGA style soldermask. The controler chip is on those boards usually soldered at the bottom side of the card. Up to now i havent had the guts to do it.

Hmm - the VRM chips appear to have the power switching devices integrated in them. The card seems to have a 5-phase section, and two-separate 1-phase VRMs with different controllers. Why they chose to package it in a BGA beats me - an 8-pin DIP or 3-pin package like the TOPswitch would be far easier to rework. The BGA looks certain to let the smoke out on an overload or short - I doubt that it can dissipate more than 100 mW. How much current can a BGA solder-ball or PCB trace to a BGA pad carry anyway?

I'm, trying to get a damaged card just like mine so that i can get the parts i need, but it's hard to find one! And i don't know any place where i can buy these "pieces" that I broke!

Bga is not that bad regarding current capability and cooling. usually, on those card there is an heatsink applied direcktly on the chip surface, similar like the die cooling of the older soket a Athlons. Thus i think this package is very convenient for massproduction and high current low space vrm units. But any way, on my card, there are two SMPS controler chips, wich can control up to 4 different and independent vrm /voltage section. On of those is probably responsible for the ddr ram voltages (ddr needs two different voltage levels, at least as i learned from the chip`s datasheet), the other controls the GPU voltage. From that point of view it makes not mutch sense, if those tiny chips have any own control logic. Thus i think, that the reason for their description is their very speciall desing, may be they are only intended for the very speciall applikation on gfx vrm`s.

Can a 17IPS62 power card have 50ZFP mosfets instead of 80R1K2P?
            by Öğretmen27
17Mosfet short circuit on IPS62 power card. Mosfet 80r1k2p mosfet 850v 4.5 A. I have a 50ZFP mosfet. 500V 7.2A. The voltage of 50ZFP is 500 V. There is already 400 v in that hot area. Is there any problem?

            Graphics Card mounting frame
            by Kemer
Hello, I removed the graphics card from my laptop and I want to heat it in the oven. What I want to ask is, is it okay to heat the card without removing the metal mounting frame on it?

As you can see in the photo, there is a plastic (black) gasket between the metal frame and the card. It sticks the frame tightly to the card.

I previously removed the metal frame while heating it, but it is quite difficult to separate it from the surface it is attached to. If there is no problem, I do not want to remove it.

What worries me right now is the possibility that...

EVGA Nu Audio Sound Card - Not Working
            by FZG
I have an EVGA Nu Audio sound card that is not working properly and I need some help diagnosing the fault (preferably by someone who owns this card and is willing to take some measurements).

The card sort of powers up (LED lights are coming on and the relais is clicking, some voltages are present) but it is not detected in Windows. I tried installing in two different PCs and tried several driver versions but the card was never detected anyway. So I thought this is probably not a driver / software-issue and then disassembled the card to take some measurements.

            I found...

Gigabyte Aorus 1080ti - card not initialising
            by benwaterson
            Hi there.

Have searched various forums but haven't come across the exact issue I am having.

Bought the 1080ti with a fault (randomly shutting down, black screen , fans full speed etc). Previous owner had replaced thermal pads but many were too thick on inspection.

I tested the card in windows, all loaded up ok. Put some load on the card and it crashed. GPU was reporting 92 degrees C at the time.

Switched the stock cooler out for an AIO water cooler from my 1080 FE, booted the card back up - temps were much better and allowed some load to be applied...
