Apple iMac G5 2004 PSU gone

Ciao to all PSU stressed friends here. I've almost ZERO experience in repairing electronics but I decided to reweake an old iMac G5 1.8GHz bought on December 2004 after I saw blowed caps on the MB. I did replaced 20 caps and the iMac was just fine! But after two days I couldn't resist and cleaned the keybord with some detergent . Then, as I swicthed on the iMac, bad smeling and black screen. The PSU has no power except 5V, seems. LEDs on the MB behave like nr.1 is ON, nr.2 flashes (and 1 second light on the front panel), nr. 3 and 4 off. Do you think (maybe Toasty... ) I could try any checking/replacement to recover this problem? Please consider that I am a biologist... Ciao, Sergio.

Sorry I forgot to add some techs about the PSU: DELTA model DPS180QB A rev 01, Apple PN 614-0329. Sergio

If LED No.2 flashes for a split second then it probably is your PSU,if you take out the PSU you may find black smears on the Imac housing. You will need a Torx No.10 security bit to open it up.
This is probably academic though as the PSU will probably stink!.

Yes, PSU is bad smelling but no smears it seems. I've tried to replace the unit but the other one is also not working! It seems that those PSU die like flies. a stupid question which comes up to me is if there are sensible points which could be looked at first in case of not working PSU. From reading some mails I got the impression that that my question could be realy stupid. BTW let's ask. Thanks

I don't understand how washing the keyboard caused this problem. It worked for 2 days then fails after washing????

What cap brand and series did you use in midplane recap job?

Could be a cap installed backwards?

Sounds like the PSU "burning coil" problem from nwd's post.

Since you admit limited knowledge, my suggestion is to double check your work and make sure no wires are pinched between case and midplane and that all insulation plastic or tape was reinstalled properly. If that fails to fix the problem, acquire a -new- PSU and use that. I understand the money limitation, but it being an Apple, I think that's a given.

The PSU part number matches others I've seen, but it being a Delta made unit does not. Also, you are on what voltage mains there? 220v?

Re: Apple iMac G5 2004 PSU gone

Thanks Toasty, your suggestion of a bad soldering work is correct. I've found that one of the last replaced cups had pins just about touching the metal shield behind. I think that happend when I moved the Mac on the table, just a question of microns. I dismounted again the MOB and saw the rest of a burning. This make sense, isn't it? Yes, the ipothesis of a short circuit keyboard is silly, now. A 220v PSU new from Apple service will be 60$ about here in Roma. All caps I bought were selected on Badcaps, following instructions, but I think that problem is now over. After checking the work, and reinstalling old PSU, same results: LED 1 on, LED 2 flashing together with the front panel light and stop. Readings at the PSU power connector stay as before, only 5v. I'll follow your suggestion and report.

It was not as simple as replacing the PSU... a new one was installed but same symptoms as before, LED light 1 on, 2 flashing, front panel light flashing, no start. No any clue what to do else, just recovering the HD. G5Bye

I think I did it. Pressing the motherboard small button which rest the electric management and then pressing the force start nearby. But no good news. Any further thoughts? Thanks to you all.

Burning on mobo? Can you please post some pictures of that?

I'll try to describe better: there was a kind of black halo (10-15mm) on the metal shield which is just on the back of the iMac, the one collecting hot from motherboard. This was in corrispondence of one of the caps I've replaced with pins just a little longer then other ones. My hypothesis is that made the short circuit. I'll try to make a picture of it but not much of it will be visible since I've replaced the cap again with a hopfully working one. ..BTW which a correct way to check a cap?

There is no insulation plastic behind mobo? Okay.

Whatever shorted may very well be the problem. If it shorted bad enough to leave a mark, I think you cooked the mobo.
