Re: APC BACKUPS-RS550 not charging battery
Dose this battery backup have a separate transformer in the case
If you have track where the battery is suppose to get the power to charge the battery
Will the unit work if you have it plugged in and remove the plug does what you have plug in the battery backup stay working you do have to have charged up batteries to do this test
This is important that it will work in the backup mode because if not it might not be worth repairing it

Re: APC BACKUPS-RS550 not charging battery
Need more help. Now i got a same model UPS to repair again, but this time found both the Fuse F1 blown and the chip TYN274PN ( IC7 ) physically damaged (blown). Considering the UPS was used for PC in a factory of sorts, assumed a power surge or voltage fluctuation had taken both out. So i replaced both the fuse and the chip. Now i am back to the similar problem you helped fix last time. Works perfectly on AC current but does not charge the battery.
The fuse and IC7 are new (just replaced)
Voltage on each capacitor is about 165V
Voltage at C43 is about 1V
I also checked the voltage across capacitor - C48 (left hand side top of IC7), which is supposed to show the reference voltage of IC7 and that is showing 5.85V correctly.
The images post replacement of fuse and IC7 are attached. Any help point me in the right direction would help.Last edited by jinu_j; 07-04-2020, 11:44 PM.Leave a comment:

Finally the replacement TYN274PN came in today and i changed in and it started working fine. Thanks a lot for your help.Leave a comment:

Re: APC BACKUPS-RS550 not charging battery
Ok will replace this and get back. What should the ideal voltage be at C43?
BUt i still dont get it, the UPS works fine, and will move to battery power when the mains go off and go back to main power when the mains come back. The only problem is once the mains come back the battery does not charge. Is the above component part of the charging circuit ?Last edited by jinu_j; 02-20-2020, 10:40 PM.Leave a comment:

Re: APC BACKUPS-RS550 not charging battery
Probably I would just go ahead replace it
It switching power regulator does not seem to be switching at all
Here is the data sheet for this ic chip

Re: APC BACKUPS-RS550 not charging battery
HI Sam
Thanks for the guidance.
All tests were conducted with the battery disconnected
I checked the fuse F3 and that is fine, its not open
There is voltage at the two capacitors (c50 and C51) about 165V each
At C43 the behavior is very weird. when i disconnect the battery and check i see about 11.45V (which is same as the current battery voltage). So i short the terminals of the capcitor so that the capacitor discharges. Now when i check the voltage is near zero but very very gradually increasing at the rate of 5mV per second. Switching on or off the 230V mains has no impact on this behaviour. I cant understand how the voltage is increasing if the mains are off. After crossing 0.5V the rate at which voltage across the capacitor increases slows down further.
So does this mean the IC is IC chip with the part number TYN274PN is bad ?? Any way to cross verify this ?
Thanks once againLeave a comment:

Re: APC BACKUPS-RS550 not charging battery
CAUTION you have line voltage at this section of this power supply so please be careful when taking voltage measurement ( 120 volts DC or higher )
With out the battery installed
First check the fuse just before the capacitors and ( IC7 )
Also check to see if you have any voltage on those two capacitor if you have voltage on the capacitors
( then go to —> )
Second
Do you have voltage on ( C43 )
If you do not have any voltage on ( C43 )
Then replace the IC chip with the part number TYN274PN ( IC7 )
Then go from there
I do not see the start capacitor for this switching power regulator or then again some of them do not have one it does have one it is ( C45 )Last edited by sam_sam_sam; 02-19-2020, 04:55 PM.Leave a comment:

APC BACKUPS-RS550 not charging battery
Hi Folks
I have a APC BACKUPS-RS550. This was lying idle for over a year. Now when i checked it was not working (no power). Checked the battery and found it to be dead( zero Volts). So i replaced it with a new battery.
Now it powers on and functions properly, but the battery does not charge so the UPS works till the battery voltage falls and then dies. I need to figure out why it is not charging. I checked the onboard fuses and it seems fine. The caps also dont seem to have any issues (atleast visually). can anyone help identify why it is failing to charge.
The pic of the PCB is attached. Any adivce on how to troubleshoot the issue ?

by ShinjuHey All!
Long time forum member here with a problematic laptop issue!
I got a RZ09-0196 with a bloated battery (still worked and charged fine) I pulled the old cell pack out and installed a new cell pack in its place.
The laptop would not power on with the new battery installed without the power supply being plugged in.
When booting into Win10 (all up to date BTW) I saw the battery icon with 49% plugged in not charging.
TL;Dr version, old battery worked, charged but was bloated, installed a new non OEM replacement, laptop/windows... -

by mon2Hi. Have a HP250 G3 laptop (schematic attached) that will not charge the battery.
1) The laptop works fine with the AC adapter.
2) The laptop works fine with a pre-charged battery (HP original with 880 cycles). The battery was depleted when brought in for service and we purchased a new clone with 2 charge cycles on it. The clone battery was received DOA and also will not charge with the laptop.
Then we purchased the NLBA1 tool which worked well to ping the clone and HP battery with success. While we could readout the parameters with the I2C / SMBUS... -
by piernov1. Some theory
1.1. Introduction
Almost every laptop has a charging circuit of some sort, that does a few things:- Manages switching between AC adapter and battery power
- Manages battery charging and generates power rail to charge battery
There are 2 different designs to handle switching between AC adapter and battery power and feeding the system:- Hybrid power boost (HPB) and traditional circuits without power boost (see Warning in HPB section)
- Narrow VDC (NVDC)
Texas instrument has a nice overview of these technologies with some more details at https:... -
by ResoluteHawkSo I can't seem to get this board to charge the battery. Inside Windows it shows the battery as detected but the battery never charges.
AC adapter outputs 19v and when plugged in with the battery in, the charging light turns orange, which normally indicates that the battery is charging. Without the battery the light is white, as it should be.
If I look at the board and specifically the battery charging IC which in this case on my board is BQ25A; I'm pretty sure that all of the voltages read out correctly.
There are no shorts that I can measure in the MOSFETS around... - Loading...
