APC BACKUPS-RS550 not charging battery

I have the APC BACKUPS 650 with a similar problem...however, it won't turn on the battery backup outlets, even with the unit connected to good 120VAC power. Just makes a ringing noise, which sounds like an inverter, but no power comes to the outlets. Only 3.45 volts are trying to charge a 12 volt battery. I took the battery out and charged it on my car charger on the slowest setting and it seems to hold a charge. After charging I can connect it to the UPS and with the unit unpluged from the wall, it make the same ringing noise. The green power light comes on, but pushing the on button does nothing.
Any help would be appreciated on next steps.

Re: APC BACKUPS-RS550 not charging battery
For your 550, I only find bits pieces here: https://www.elektroda.pl/rtvforum/topic3529704.html
I have this schematic for APC 640-0259_REV05 which is I think is Back-UPS RS500, BR500i. No charging - electrolytic capacitor C7 22uF 16V usually bad. Check R28 runs very hot.
It is unfortunately different, 550 using IC2 TYN278PN and some add-on TL4 board with two 22uF 400V for C12. IC2 does not need the usual 22-47uF cap there on pin 2 BP/M.Last edited by redwire; 12-31-2021, 01:52 PM.Leave a comment:

Re: APC BACKUPS-RS550 not charging battery
Did you check the date code on the "new" battery? Depending on where you get them from (don't get from amazon or ebay) they might not turn over quickly. Lead acid batteries go fast when they aren't hooked up to power...Leave a comment:

Re: APC BACKUPS-RS550 not charging battery
If you left this idle for a year, it's likely your batteries are dead. Lead acid batteries do not take well to being left idle, just like in your car. I have a UPS that I'm not using at the moment, but I leave it plugged in. Best case is these batteries last 2-5 years when plugged in all the time. Dead UPS are always avaliable because the batteries go so quickly.Leave a comment:

UPSs try to recharge batteries too quickly (and too cheaply!) on the premise that they may be "needed, again" in short order. It would be nice if the UPS could NOTICE the line conditions (i.e., how often there ARE outages and what their durations are) and adjust this policy accordingly.
For example, if you encounter brief "power flickers", then the battery is carrying the load for really short periods so charging it "more gently" is likely not going to increase your risk of it being insufficiently charged to handle the NEXT flicker (this of course depends on the average interarrival times of those events -- but the UPS can determine that empirically!)
Similarly, if the battery is deeply discharged by prolonged outages -- but they are infrequent -- then it can still opt for a gentler recharge (or, perhaps a quick influx of charge when power first returns but then switching to a slower charge rate to let the battery cool)Leave a comment:

Re: APC BACKUPS-RS550 not charging battery
I am finally giving up on this repair. The Opto was a surface mounted device. Its placed right next to the transformer which has a lot of plastic on it. In my speed to remove the Opto from the board before causing damage to the transformer from the hot air gun, I succeeded in ripping up the pads and track from the PCB for one of the legs. There does not seem to be a way to salvage the situation. :-)Leave a comment:

Re: APC BACKUPS-RS550 not charging battery
Look at page 3 of spec sheet, the rank code marking is on the bottom right of the body.
You have A817V so body code is HCPL-817-06xE
If the rank code is '0' then the CTR is 50 ~ 600%. = HCPL-817-060E
If is marked an rank A = HCPL-817-06AE for CTR of 80 ~ 160%.
BTW, did you remove the opto and then check resistance of the Photo transistor side and the Emitter side?Attached FilesLast edited by budm; 07-06-2020, 01:39 AM.Leave a comment:

Re: APC BACKUPS-RS550 not charging battery
Same problem here searching for the schematic. I came across the Russian page when i was searching for the schematic. The only difference between the board mentioned on that page and my board is the REV number. Mine is REV 06, on the page it is REV 07
Thanks. i will try replacing the Opto-Isolator. But I cant seem to the find the exact replacement part (A817V). Search for this leads to an equivalent HCPL-817.
But there are so many variants of it, i dont know which one to pick. They differ primarily on the CTR value ranging between 50% to 300%. Not sure which one is compatible to the one on the boardLeave a comment:

Re: APC BACKUPS-RS550 not charging battery
From my research, the RS-550 uses PCB 640-1172A REV 05.
But put that aside, I cannot find the schematic of the PCB 640-1115A_REV 06 used in the UPS that you have.
I still suspect that opto-isolator is damaged when that TNY blew up.Leave a comment:

Re: APC BACKUPS-RS550 not charging battery
So it is RS500 as shown in Russian link? not RS550?
RS550 has display panel, but your board does not have any connector that goes to the display panel.
Show us the pictures of YOUR unit.
Your unit uses PCB 640-1115A REV. 06 as shown in your pictures and in Russian link.Last edited by budm; 07-05-2020, 11:53 PM.Leave a comment:

Re: APC BACKUPS-RS550 not charging battery
Voltage across U1-OptoCoupler
Battery connected - With Mains power on but ups off
- Across pins 1 and 2 - zero
- Across pins 3 and 4 - 0.186V
Battery connected - With Mains power on but ups on
- Across pins 1 and 2 - 0.008V
- Across pins 3 and 4 - 0.186V
Battery connected - With Mains power off but ups on backup power
- Across pins 1 and 2 - 1.157V
- Across pins 3 and 4 - 0V
The unit i have is described here. Its in Russian i think but google translate to convert to englishLeave a comment:

Re: APC BACKUPS-RS550 not charging battery
Is this the actual model you have?
https://www.apc.com/shop/il/en/produ...rentSite=false
Can we the rest of the unit and the transformers?
I wonder if opto U1 is damaged when the TNY blew up.Last edited by budm; 07-05-2020, 11:18 PM.Leave a comment:

Re: APC BACKUPS-RS550 not charging battery
Do you have any voltage on U1 on the input side of itLeave a comment:

Re: APC BACKUPS-RS550 not charging battery
Yes the UPS has a separate transformer in the case. The transformer input is J3 and J4. The output goes to J2. When the UPS is on backup (battery) power, the transformer kicks in and voltage at J3 j4 is about 8V as battery is weak (about 10V) and the voltage at J5 is 210V.
When on main power all the voltages at the transformer at zero.
The UPS works fine and switches to battery power when mains power is switched off and switches back to main power when main power returns.Leave a comment:

by BowlineMy question pertains to understanding the control circuity inside a Dell PT434 type battery used in Dell E6400, E6410 and other Dell notebooks?
Does anyone have a circuit diagram for the inside of a Dell PT434 battery and/or a description of how the control lines work to control this battery?
My reason for asking is I have a battery which I cannot get to charge beyond 1% in a Dell E6410 or E6400.
The LED bar graph charge indicator on the battery shows one LED lighted when the info button is pressed.

by drlarsenHello. Sorry for the long post, but I am trying to decide if this is a simple battery replacement, or potentially something more complicated.
I bought an open box MacBook Air M1 2020 A2337. Seller claimed it was never used. Visually, it appears pristine.
On arrival, the battery was completely flat. Computer powers up and boots fine. Battery status showing 1% and charging, 1 cycle. coconutBattery showing 0 mAh and ~6 watts.
After some hours, the battery status did not improve. Restore via DFU did not help.
I connected the power adapter to a Kill-a-Watt... -
