Re: Power supply build quality pictorial. part 2
And why did we miss that PIC16C72A Microcontroller?
And that 8pin chip on the output side between the cables is just a serial Flash ROM.
And that chip with the cap glued on top is a FanXPert 3 Chip (whatever that is)...Comment

Okay, silly Deer jokes aside, yes I have seen Deer PSUs this good before and even better. It all depends how much you paid for it. The cheap ones can be almost as bad as the L&C line. The better ones can be fairly decent: line filtering, PI coils on the outputs, and a real"35" size transformer.

Well I don't know about being beefy, but it certainly has some "meat" on it. Maybe enough to last an entire winter.

I could actually say it powers a "GIANT ROBOT". (Megas XLR)
The Delux is still powering the Athlon 64 3000+ system. I've got two more PSUs though - a Premier LC-B400ATX and a Premier LC-B450E. All those three have PI coils. The former has them installed by myself and the latter came with them already.
The LC-B450E also has a weird thing - one of the rails has actually two rectifiers in parallel - it's the 5v rail if I'm not mistaken. Why do that is actually past my ability to understand - why do that when you have the 12v rail?Main rig:

We (the forum) encourage using attachments because images hosted off-site are unreliable.
As an example: You look at a year old thread to get info for a repair, only to get the dreaded "image not found" error! ... that can be quite frustrating!

Re: Power supply build quality pictorial. part 2
Interesting PSU.
I would guess either double-transistor forward or full-bridge. Maybe the latter as there are 4 transistors on what appears to be the primary heatsink. The other primary heatsink probably has the APFC transistor(s) and rectifier(s).
I don't know what the PIC chip does in it (or why there are even so many ICs). Most likely using a programmable IC like a PIC chip was easier than trying to make all sorts of controllers work together.
Very nice power supply!
I'd definitely mod it to ATX standard and use it if that is possible. I'm pretty sure this will work forever with those caps and that built quality.Last edited by momaka; 10-27-2015, 09:59 PM.Comment

by JimBanvilleThe sub developed a constant popping every couple seconds from woofer and power LED flickering with nothing but wall AC connected. Connecting an audio cable didn't change anything. It doesn't play but a second or two of audio in between the pops.
Opened it up and discovered the power supply is making a faint clicking or ticking sound.
I measured the amp's output to the woofer and it pulses up to 50mv DC to be driver. The pulses coincide with the power supply ticking/clicking.
I measured the power supply output going to the amp board and it too has this pulsing. Voltage cycles...-

by momakaMore Lo-Fi speakers and another DIY surround repair.
The patient this time: a pair of Philips F9217L-50R speakers from a budget Philips rack/component system from the '80's. The system belongs to my brother in-law… or actually his parents. However, they didn't want it when they moved houses and he liked it anyways, so he ended up keeping it. It's a pretty cool-looking vintage system with a wood/veneer cabinet and shelves for records and cassettes. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to take a picture of it or get the model #'s (but maybe next time I visit, if anyone is curious?)

by momakaBoston Acoustics fans, this thread might not be for you.
A few years back (~2018 time frame), I picked up a set of free JVC speakers from someone on Craigslist that no one seemed to be interested in. The guy also had a single Boston Acoustics HD8 speaker – yes, just one cabinet. He said he had no idea where he got this one from or why it's only by itself. But like the JVC speakers, it was going to get tossed at the end of that week… so I came to collect, as usual. And that's all I know about this HD8. After all, I figured why not take it and see what's inside… show it to the...

by sam_sam_samThese cheap non brand capacitors at it again
Last night we had a power outage [ long drawn out trying three to come back up before going out completely ] and when I went to turn the DVR camera recorder back today no go 3 bad capacitors ( one capacitor no ESR reading on DVR board the other 3 capacitor on the power supply board over 40 ohm this is not a misprint ) on the external switching power supply and one capacitor on the DVR camera recorder board where the power supply that goes to the hard drive disk is
Well at least I have the cameras back on line I to try the... -
by sam_sam_samWhen I originally started with my DVR recorder it had 4 individual switching switching power supply’s that were sh*t so I bought a 7 amp 12 volt switching power supply and modified the output plug and put a four output power supply cable to match the input power supply cable inputs
Which worked for over 14 years until a few days ago when the cameras went dark no picture anymore well it turns out now the switching power supply has stopped working altogether now so I have to troubleshoot what has happened to this power supply more later on today what I found
