    My friend is retarded

I swear to god he really is.

He has a super nice computer, a EVGA motherboard with a 780i chipset, Q9300, and dual gtx260's (had a third installed, but it died,) and he didn't have a good enough psu for that. So what did he do? He wired in two psu's. One to run the graphics cards, and one to run everything else.

Heres where he's stupid. He used two Yulen "400W" psu's. Each one was non-APFC, had 2 Canicon main caps with Miacon secondaries (never heard of them,) the heatsinks were decent-ish sized, but they were just pieces of junk.

I asked him how he could run his computer on those, he said "they are two really nice Yulen power supplies, they are really high quality and will last forever. "

Long story short, they both blew up.

He used even worse power supplies before those, two 300W sparkles, have some no name caps on the primaries, bright red sleeve, and both of those blew up also.

    Re: My friend is retarded

something needs to be done that they blow up AND take pc with them...
    THEN he'll become clever instantly!

    lol!

but you know what; generally two psus is not a bad idea at all:
buy two fortrons and each will work half power, and god knows how much they can last...

He now has a Tagan 1100W (aka Topower 1100w,) which is a lot better. Still, a 1100w Topower for $289 is overpriced, should have gotten a enermax like I told him.

@i4004: running at half power means terrible efficiency.

i think my present 350w psu never goes over 200w anyway...

Um, Sparkles are Fortron are FSP?

I must be retarded too then because I've a server here that runs 2 FSP 250W, 1st runs the Mobo, 12v for the CPU and cards (a couple of cheap IDE controllers and a GbE), 2nd runs 8 HDDs and a resistor on the 3.3v to keep within specs. It has around 3 months of uptime at the moment and shows no signs of missing a beat (famous last words!).

FSP = Fortron => [originally] Fortron Source Power Group. They keep shortening the name.
Sparkle + FSP => Two companies that merged. [So I understand.]
I think before the merger FSP did some OEM for Sparkle so you'd see a Sparkle unit with an FSP Part Number, but now I see both names displayed on some units.

                Way back:
Sparkle specialized in OEM PSU's for Servers.
FSP specialized in OEM PSU's for Consumer PCs.
.. Though both did some of both, and still do.

Testing ATX PSUs under load - Does loading the ATX 24 pin also load EPS & PCIE?
                    by AJ847.63e
                    Hi Folks,

Just wanted to clear up a misunderstanding of mine (or what I expect is one). Isn't the 12V rail from the 24 pin, EPS and PCIE separated? IE if I put a power resistor on the ATX 12V pin that is not going to load, thus tell me if the EPS or PCIE rails are fine?

I was recently watching ArIs from Hardware Busters video on how to properly test ATX PSUs without using 5 figure Croma substations.

The PCB adapter he used breaks out the 12, 5 and 3.3V pins from the 24 pin and gives you banana plugs to connect to. That is a bit useless is it not? Aren't...

                    Macintosh Quadra 840AV PSU
                    by nicktasios
I had my Quadra 840AV (which I recapped and had working) plugged in for some time without using it and randomly decided to turn it on today. Unfortunately it did not turn on. After checking the PSU, I found out I was not getting anything from 12V, only from the 5V rail. After a few minutes, I removed the PSU and plugged it back in the electrical outlet and it suddenly started making a weird sound and soon after smoke started coming out. I quickly unplugged it. I opened it up but on first instance I didn't see anything out of the ordinary really. I later turned it back on and one of the MOVs blew...

Friend messed up my laptop motherboard while working on my bench
                    by Geeker007
                    Hi All,

So my friend was visiting and he wanted to use my solder bench to solder on some WLED circuit board. My laptop was open on the side for RAM upgrade. I know my mistake.

So while soldering he had too much solder on the soldering iron tip and he just shook off the soldering iron on the table itself to remove extra solder on the soldering tip and it landed on the motherboard of laptop. He then out of fear tried to remove it using solder wick and did more damage by removing some components as well. So here I am with weird situation.

                    I have not tried putting...

                    by matthewmcconaughey
Hello, Badcaps is my last resort. I am the first owner of the monitor. I reached almost every repair store in my area, but no one even wanted to hear about troubleshooting an old CRT monitor. At this point, I have been trying to figure it out by myself, but I have no idea where to start or look for.

I wish to know how to think and locate a failing component. I will put all my efforts to learn and contribute.

Hot Air Blew Away Resistors Near Bios
                    by brightest_z
Hi All - I'm in the midst or reprogramming the bios on my gen1 Surface Laptop Studio and I accidentally blew away 2 resistors nearby the bios. I don't have another board to measure values of the missing resistors and schematics aren't available, bbut the bios is a 6x5mm Winbond WSON8, W25R256JWPQ model. The traces are conductive to Pins 3 and 7 (IO2 & IO3 respectively) so I have reason to believe they are 10k pull up resistors since IO2&3 pins are used for Quad SPI instructions.

Does anyone with more knowledge, and experience than I, know if this is the case?
