Re: echo star "480w".just when you thought you had seen it all...

While browsing MPJA a site I frequent for electronic odds and ends I found another Echostar before I read this post.

    http://www.mpja.com/prodinfo.asp?number=17714+PS

It gave me an odd feeling and I thought it was crap especially with the cheap label on it. They claim this one is 600 watts . They're gonna need bigger weights .

I'm sure the fan is loud as hell too just like ALL dirt cheap supplies.

      "Echo Star"

Does that mean it goes "BOOM" loud enough to echo?

          Hey wait:
I had an Echo Star 580 watt that kicked butt on an Antec TP2-550.
It had Teapo and Cheng capacitors as I recall.
Was a feather-light gutless wonder but at least it ran.

Nah, the echo is from hitting the side of the junk box on the other side of the room.

What feeling do you have thinking they produce also a 680W unit?

Was a little heavy in the +5v there, sounds like its more designed for a old athlon or pentium 3 system. probalby all use the same pcb board.

That means it would be suited for an Asus A7N8X.

And NOT for an Athlon 64.

And NOT for an Abit NF7.

And NOT for an LGA 775!

In addition, some LGA 775 motherboards require the 8-pin connector!

The Asus P5QL Pro don't require any 8-pin.

Thus, there's a good chance that it's gonna be incompatible, even if the PSU turns out to be a fine PSU.

In addition, it may not even have a 24-pin ATX connector!

From looking at the ones I had they are still using the old old ATX PCB layouts.
Might be okay for an old P3/P2 (or ATX Socket 7). - Except.
I checked them and the voltages were all over the place.

Gluing chunks of (what appears to be) iron to the PSU case to add weight to a gutless wonder is truly shameful.

They could at least have used a heavier (as in made using heavier plastic) fan.

Funny thing is, I never had a gutless wonder go pow on me (knock on wood.) I've seen several that DID go pow, though, including one whose Fuhjyuhuhyyhuyuji's went south, sending a number of undersized support components to kingdom come. Client brought it in claiming that the fan was dead. Ironically, the fan was just about the only thing that was still working in that mess.

Marginal design PSUs will POW regardless if pulling enough current. Several good PSU reviewers have load cell equipment that can pull specific loads to determine how good PSU can hold up all the way to torture levels (around 80% or so in hot box).

                        Cheers, Wizard

output 480w worth of heat as it blows up!

Got the 680w with a bundled rig I bought off of ebay. Ive had it one month and the ps blew to knigdom come this morning. I had it on a DFI LP 790fx w/ a Phenom ii x4 920. I hope I can salvage everything. Ive never seen transistors and diodes scatter across a room before. If this is all you have money to buy, save yourself the heartache, and go to the library or a cafe. What a mess.

                                      >>About a year ago I took an outlet strip outside and put an old selenium rectifier in there to see what this horrible stink smelled like ugh I won't do that again .<<
You do understand that gas is toxic, correct? Hydrogen selenide. A cousin to hydrogen sulphide (rotten egg) gas.

                                      Never bothered me though...

                                      >>several in each outlet.<<
Close. You're on the right track, however.

                                      >>extra credit for using caps with no vents<<
We didn't have vents them back then... Every one was a tiny missile!

Okay, back on topic. Noticed the lack of UL certification... I wonder why...

                                      LOL!

Yeah I won't be doing that again the stench was nasty I can only imagine it going up in someones room .

Well lead and rosin fumes are toxic too but I don't spend my time breathing the concentrated vapors.

It's wierd if they defrauded their customers with dummy weights why not stamp the UL logo on there?

They couldn't do anything to shock me after the weights.

Elements of the past and the future combining to make something not quite as good as either.
