Toshiba Laptop power supply PA3715U-1ACA not working, unknown OEM (pics included)

I thought this was a usual cable problem, turns out the psu has no output voltage and the primary cap doesn't charge.

During further inspection, I found that the AC filtering common mode choke has 1 of its 4 legs disconnected. I removed that choke and as you can see in the photos, the pcb has burn marks around the cut leg.

It seems strange to me also that the AC adapter label doesn't state who the OEM is. I was unable to specify it even after opening the case.

I checked the coil and I din't find it shorted (between Live and Neutral) or open circuit.

What do you think caused this fault? Should I try to reuse the coil?

bad solder joints can heat up till they burn.
i'd clean the legs and solder it back in properly.

i used to see this type of problem a lot with mains inlet connectors.

The UL number points to Delta.

If there was no glue, it may have been moving/vibrating, breaking the wires over time. They are pretty thin while the choke as a whole is kinda heavy…

That is a cleverly designed AC adapter. I have two just like it. They have managed to share the one MOSFET for the PFC and Flyback SMPS stages. It will run a bit cooler that most other AC adapters.

            It is working without problem.

I am overloading it with an Acer Laptop (Athlon 64 3000+ Geforce 5700 Go) that requires 135W power supply. This is rated for 75W.

Overloading? Barely. If it is not ClawHammer/Newark (I doubt it) than it is 35 W CPU+around 30 W GPU. That's TDP, actual consumption will be lower. That is no problem and when charging, the circuitry will adjust charging rate according to available power.

Or are you playing OCCT while also charging battery?

I wont argue about it. I was just counting on the fact that the original power supply of that laptop was a huge Lite-On rated for 135W maximum.

Anyway, it appears that the cable was bad too. Although the laptop worked flawlessly for hours, running 3DMark and CPU stress applications, when I moved it a little it shut down. I found the spot of the cable that was internally cut and fixed it.

It's odd but the problem was not on the dc jack, but in the middle of the cable. Anyway, thanks anyone for the help

Ive seen this kind of problem in many devices, it tends to happern to heavy components or power sockets that have no mechanical boltdown. Just the solder holding it in :-(

I would just scrape the pins down to the clean copper then tin every wire untill they gleam , plop it back in with a good quality solder, it wont happern again.

I guess maybe the thing was dropped and a bad solder joint finally popped O/C.

That is a beautifully designed PSU!

Interesting that there is no manufacturer mark on there.
I wonder, maybe the manufacturer IS written on there, just in mandarin instead of english?

I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

                        Assuming...

Desoldering gun station modified to use a 18 volt @ 20 amp switching power supply
                        by sam_sam_sam
I have wanting to do this project for quite sometime now and I finally found a switching power supply that will work on this desoldering gun station ZD-915 that the original switching power supply took a shit and just was not worth trying to fix it because this switching power is not quite big enough to handle the heater element and the vacuum pump

One note when I tested the switching power supply and the voltage control board I noticed that this desoldering gun heat up much faster than the original switching power supply which I was really surprised by to the point that I might buy...
