Antec Smart Power 400w successfully repaired

I just wanted to share my experience about the problems I was having with my computer.

First of all here are my pc specs:
    P4 2.8c
    Asus P4P800 (Motherboard)
    1gig ram
    1 Sata Raptor HD
    1 Sata 250 gig drive
    1 EIDE 60 gig drive
    2 cd/dvd roms
    Creative Audigy sound card
    Ati Tv tuner
    Nvida 7800GS Agp
And of course the Antec 400w PSU

Ok as you can see this is about a midrange pc or so for todays standards. The problems I was experiencing was random crashing and rebooting. Never had a set pattern to the crashing at first. Usually seemd to do it when I was away from the computer. Originally I suspected that the video card was drawing to much power on the 12v rail. So I spliced into the wires and joined the 12volt 1 and 2 rails together on its own seperate connector and hooked that to my video card. It made a difference for a little while but then the crashing got worse about every 10 minutes. Also I couldnt ever get the computer to turn on or off for that matter. Holding down the powerbutton only reset the computer and it booted as soon as you let go. Once shut off you couldnt get it to turn on.

So... I pulled the PSU back out and took it apart again. I started looking at the capacitors. There was 2 caps that were slightly swelled on top and one had a small spot of leakage. After some research on this site I decided to go forth and get the Radio Shack caps. One problem was the caps that were bad were the fuhjahaksdfjklasjf ones (you all know what im talking about) 1000uf 10v well the radio shack ones were 1000uf 35volt. Putting them in was like sticking the square peg in the round hole. Not to mention I was using a 140watt solder gun. SO with all these things going against me I managed to un-solder the bad caps and put the other ones in, leaving them sticking about 1 inch out of the board because of lack of space. I reassembled everything and tested it out on some fans. Then I hooked it up in an OLd pc and it booted fine. I put it back into my main pc and it works perfectly. Boots up with the first click of the power button and I havent had it crash since. This site really helped me answer the questions I had about caps and it only cost me 3 dollars which is a rip off for 2 caps but hey it beats spending 120 for a good one.

I have one question though ... I was looking on newegg and found some ABS brand power supplies. They look nice ... Plenty of amps on the rails and fully tested. What are some good brands that you guys know of other than Antec because I personally wont buy any more of there junk psu's.

Search the forums. Plenty of advice on power supplies. I have a 400w Smart Power in my main family computer. It works great after a proper recap.

Great you got it going . However I suspect the Radio Shack caps are not low ESR as required for this service. If they are rated at 85C they will be the wrong type of cap.

So what is the big difference between the 85C and the 105C ? I was assuming it was the maximum temperature they could handle. These caps are only controlling a +5v i think they are located near where the green wire comes in from the motherboard connector. Now the pc turns on like normal so I assume these controlled something with turning it on.

RadioShack caps are general-purpose caps. Though I have seen general-purpose caps in 3 power supplies.

            1. L&C: 2 saturn-brand general purpose 85C 330uf 200V caps for primary

            2. "The Best Power": A few TEAPO SEK 105C general purpose caps on secondary

            3. No mention of brand on label: CapXon KM 105C general-purpose series caps everywhere in PSU

85C caps aren't the best for PSUs, but right now they're doing the job for him.

If the cap replaced is on the +5V rail near the green wire it is most likely part of standby power used for starting and you will most likely get away with a GP cap. This would not be the case at the high current 12V and 5V outputs.

Re: Antec Smart Power 400w successfully repaired

I have seen several PSU`s, where the stand by caps are bulging really fast.
This make me think that there is may be even more stress then on the other rails or that the caps quality is worser than there.

I personally would therefore use good low esr caps there, nothing else.
As on modern systems, 5v Sb is feed to vital parts, i would certainly avoid any gambling in this area.
A new board is probably way more expensive than a few good low esr caps.

Same for me the 2 1000uf Fukyuus on my Antec were bulged while the secondary caps were fine. I believe those 1000uf caps are for the standby supply.

I replaced EVERY Fukyuu cap in my supply I did a complete recap I didn't want any of those bad boys remaining. I even replaced the mini Fukyuu caps on the fan controller standard size caps fit just fine on that riser board by the way.

The smaller value Fukyuu caps were general purpose so I replaced them with Nippon Chemicons. The low ESR caps were replaced with Panasonic FCs with a bit of elbow grease to get them to fit in of course .

Avoid Ratshack caps like the plague ALL the caps they have are 85 C. If you want some good low esr caps cheaply get the Panasonic FC series from Digikey they never went wrong for me.

Or PM Topcat and he can hook you up with some Samxons.

It works now but being 85C GP caps I wouldn't expect them to last too terribly long. Long enough to get you by for a little while though. I would suggest you contact topcat and get either some Samxons or rubycons.

I just repaired yet another of these... tossed it into the trash. Man, oh man... I am having a lot of these fail. All the same failures, too. Caps.

Heh, and I remember years ago when everyone was going on about how great Antec PSU's were. And look how that turned out...

So don't believe everything you read, especially on the internet about computer parts. Just because some overclocker type site endorses it with the super kickass gold award, doesn't mean it'll still be working after a year or two.

I have repaired several Antec SP units. They work well after a proper recap, but looking back on it, it might not even be worth your time, depending on how much you value your time. Especially when you can get this:

                        http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104952

                        Or my personal favorite:

A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still.

Those PSUs are nice but I like Antecs the 2 fan design was a good idea.

The only reason they shyed away from it was because stupid customers were returning them because they thought the fan wasn't working . I guess the large sticker RIGHT OVER THE FAN saying that it only comes on when the PSU reaches a certain temperature wasn't enough.

Plus these PSUs run super quiet. Unlike some PSUs out there that sound like a leaf blower to me. There are plenty of sites out there that don't list the dBs on the fan.

Also not many power supplies have the mix and match cable system that the Antecs have. Less useless cables zip tied in the computer case = better airflow.

A recap for me on one of these supplies runs me about an hour.

Oh any by the way the first link is for an FSP I believe that they manufactured the SP PSUs for Antec. I hope that they still don't use Fukyuus.

The AcBel looks good though .

Oh whoops the Antecs were made by Channel Well Technology.

I got it messed up Antec used to use FSP to make its PSUs about 10 years ago they were rock solid.
