I've found that I could really use a bench power supply. I was wondering if converting a power board from an LCD TV would be a good idea. The right board would already have 5-6v, 12v, and 24v output. Any other voltages I could get by adding resistors. Or maybe I could just use the 24v and make the output variable with a potentiometer. I would add a display, on/off switch, 5k resistor between 5v pin and stb pin to turn on the board. Basically I wouldn't have to do much other than that, put it in a case, add some plugs for test leads. Wouldn't be for any high load testing. Just for testing the occasional relay, small motor, etc. Any ideas, suggestions?

I thought this was pretty cool.

I haven't tried it myself yet, but I don't see why it shouldn't work. The only thing I can think of is that some of the output rails may need a minimum load to have the power supply running stable. Or maybe not - you will see when you turn it on. If any of the voltages are way off or oscillating, you probably will need a minimum load.
I was actually thinking of doing the same thing at one point in time but never got to it. I have 2 LCD boards laying around as well. One even has a fairly high current and high voltage output: 20-ish mA at 1 kV or thereabouts.Comment

Good point. So I may need load resistors. Thanks for pointing that out to me.------------signature starts here------------

load resistors were explained in the video. Most of P/S's have load resistors inside. They are normally burning hot.
Actually none of my bench power supplies were originally produced as bench power supplies. There is more than enough info about them on the internets, especially if it is ATX p/s. Please show us your TV P/S board.Last edited by domas; 10-07-2013, 03:55 AM.Comment

Vizio e601i-A3 - Has Sound and Display, But No Backlight - Bad Power Supply Board or Bad LED Bulbs ?by Tynan DillI was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.
Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.
I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.
The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.
With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

by sam_sam_samI have wanting to do this project for quite sometime now and I finally found a switching power supply that will work on this desoldering gun station ZD-915 that the original switching power supply took a shit and just was not worth trying to fix it because this switching power is not quite big enough to handle the heater element and the vacuum pump
One note when I tested the switching power supply and the voltage control board I noticed that this desoldering gun heat up much faster than the original switching power supply which I was really surprised by to the point that I might buy... -
by shamsudeenHi all, I just need to know that, can i use SMPS type power supply to test and short circuit detection on a laptop motherboard?
I saw 95% of repair guys are using only Linear bench power supply. linear bench power supply is pricy, thats why i planned to get one SMPS supply.
i know that in linear power supply the noise will be very low comparing to SMPS supply.... -
by rabsonnjalaHie I have a Lenovo laptop
Lenovo Ideapad 100-14IBY AIVP1-AIVP2 LA-C771P rev 1.0
it's working only on the bench power supply when I put the battery it doesn't power on. when I also use the original charger it doesn't power. the batter Is fully charged, I used another laptop to charge the battery. but when I use a bench power supply it works perfectly
below are my readings
with the original charger only

PIN2 0.22V
PIN3 0.45V
PIN4 0.45V

by JimBanvilleThe sub developed a constant popping every couple seconds from woofer and power LED flickering with nothing but wall AC connected. Connecting an audio cable didn't change anything. It doesn't play but a second or two of audio in between the pops.
Opened it up and discovered the power supply is making a faint clicking or ticking sound.
I measured the amp's output to the woofer and it pulses up to 50mv DC to be driver. The pulses coincide with the power supply ticking/clicking.
I measured the power supply output going to the amp board and it too has this pulsing. Voltage cycles...-
