Coolmax shuts off after a few seconds

I got this thing cheap brand new and decided to recap it, so I did. When I plug it into a computer, it gets stable 5VSB but when I hit the power button it will turn on for about 2 seconds and then shut off. When hitting the power button again it will not turn on until power has been pulled and the PSU is plugged back in. When it powers up for that 2 seconds, the 12V reads ~12.16V every time.

I can't find any shorts....although the soldering side looks bad (including mine ) Any ideas? I would appreciate any feedback! Let me know if I need to take some better pictures.

(Side question) On the 12V it has two 16A schottky's in parallel but it has no shunts and only one group of 12V wiring, does this mean that it will only work as a single rail @ 16A but will be more efficient than just one 16A shottky?

Re: Coolmax shuts off after a few seconds

Is this happening powering a load or unloaded, and how much load? I'm guessing too much or too little load on the 5V rail.

Two schottkys in parallel can't be assumed to provide 100% of their summed current, but would be more efficient under 16A AND will allow higher than 16A. One will inevitably have a slightly lower forward voltage than the other and pass more current but this will cause it to heat up more, raising the forward voltage till there is (not an equilibrium but still) a reasonable sharing of current between the two. It's unlikely they will be the bottleneck on 12V current though you didn't mention the (probably false) specs Coolmax gave the unit.

Thank you for the informative response, Coolmax claims 26A on the 12V. My test machine is a Pentium 4 Prescott @ 3GHz, 2 RAM sticks and a CD ROM drive so maybe you are right and there isn't enough 5V going through it, I will try plugging in some hard drives

You, sir.....were spot on! We have life So I'm guessing there was too low of a load and the 5V sky rocketed and tripped the OVP?

Yeah, seems that way. Too low for their cheap design. I suspect they probably use higher ohm value dummy load resistors trying to make their cheap original caps last longer by removing some of the heat they create.

Glad you got it sorted out.

Yeah I was thinking about removing them. The original caps were Gold Link and CS...I doubt they would have lasted long

I have a really weird problem, this motherboard was working normally, someday it just started and all fans were running but didn't want to post, tried resetting bios, checking CPU and it was getting warm tried external gpu, flashed bios with programmer, but same problem.
Next day after several attempts the board goes into protection mode, no more staying on, I turn on the PSU fans starts directly turning, it used to not start until I press the pwr button, now it starts directly and fans spins, and shuts off after 3 seconds sometimes less, then won't start again unless I unplug the PSU and...

Sony LED 65X9005A shuts down after few seconds - looking for help
              by tec3000
Hi community! Germany calling I am wondering if you guys can help me out. I have an issue with my Sony LED TV. I've been told this is a good place to ask. Thanks for anyone who will reply and offer advice. Appreciated!

I have a KD-65X9005A Sony 4k LED TV. For a few weeks I've got this problem where I turn on the TV and within a few seconds the TV starts getting darker until it shuts itself off and I get the 4 blinking error code. HOWEVER there is one exception: Whenever I switch to the i-Manual, a full screen on-screen instruction manual, the TV never turns off. I tested for hours!...

              Hello together,

I am hoping for some tips here to repair a notebook.

              The notebook has following issue:
After starting the notebook it shut down after a few seconds.
Sometimes it is possible to enter the bios but then after, another few seconds it shuts down also.
The time until shutdown varies slightly.

              What I've tried so far:
              - cmos cleared
              - removed all components that are not essential for motherboard testing including keyboard and touchpad
              - ram exchanged
              - same behaviour with power supply or battery...

              Hello guys. I have a legion 5 17ach6h with Ryzen 7 5600h and RTX3060.
It was working perfectly fine but the cpu was overheating so i decided to replace thermal paste. I bought one from local hardware store and replcaed. it looked fine then the fan started to spin at the full speed after about 1 minute and then immediately shut off after 10 seconds. Then I though if i have done something wrong, so i cleaned up everything with IPA and put new thermal paste. but the issue was still there. After that, I came across this article where he had similar issue and he was able to solve it by replacing...

Asus VivoBook X540YA won't start, shuts down after 5 seconds
              by totof
              Hello.

I have a problem with my Asus X540YA PC, it starts and shutdown immediately after 5 seconds.
Unfortunately I did not find the diagram of this motherboard (X540YA rev 3.0 motherboard, DAXKAFMB6E0 REV:E) and it is hard for me to find the real problem.
I identified that all the voltages are good (5V, 3.3V, 0.9V, 1.5V, 1.8V) except those of the CPU.
During the few seconds of starting the power consumption is 20 mA (no shortcut).
I have read the BIOS and its contents is good.
I think my problem is the absence of +12VSUS signal. The problem is...
