I know this is an old thread but wanted to share some...These caps came out of Coolmax, L&C, Sun Pro, and Logisys PSU's

        Re: Fake primary capacitors

Wow, more fakery (is that even a word, btw?). I guess from now on, when I see primary caps from unknown Chinese manufacturer, I will just assume the capacitance is 1 level lower than what is printed on the sleeve. Even though it may not be the case for every cheap cap brand, I think it's a safe assumption regardless.

          Re: Fake primary capacitors

That's a good assumption. Unfortunately it depends...Another 470uF HEC input cap that was black instead of blue was actually 470uF. And a CS cap that I figured would be fake was its actual value. I wish they were more consistent!!!

The Fuhjyyu is actually within tolerance (barely...), so it isn't necessarily fraudulently labelled.

Yeah you're right. I measured the other one that ran along side it and it measured 433uF so I assumed they were really 470's I should have posted the picture of that one

No-one would be dumb enough to fake a Fuhjyyu. Although, one could probably dress up a Fuhjyyu as a KZG and no-one would know the difference.

                    Re: Fake primary capacitors

People have to remember most manufacturers don't care about Fuhjyuu caps -- they use them because they're cheap. And I'll bet they're easier to fake as there's less vigilance over them. So if supplier X suddenly has a large supply of Fuhjuuu and the procurement manufacturer can get a raise by dropping the per-unit cost by 20 cents then you will see fake Fuhjyoo.

I found these fake Rubycon snap-in units in two identical Chinese power supplies.
Officially, Rubycon USP only comes in 85C whereas these fakes (both USP series) were labelled 105C.

My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

                        Haha well found!

Got any esr specs and capacitance specs for the fakes? (I.e., are they actually 100uF?)

The JEE 330uF 200V primaries which came out of this trashed King World ATX-250W PSU measured at 202.8uF and 198.8uF respectively, both with an ESR of 0.07 ohms and a date code of 9828. No doubt they are 220s with a 330uF label, as they are still in tolerance of said capacitance.

Same again with Su'scon. The two 470uF 200V LXs I ripped from an L&C LC-230ATX were measured at 312.0uF and 319.9uF respectively; both 0.06 ohms ESR. As with the above caps, they are well within tolerance... of a 330uF capacitor. This PSU was also from 1998.

That line through the side of the 'Mercedes' vent looks like they tried to turn it into a K shape to match what a Rubycon should have.

                                            Hello,

First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."

I decided to take one of the Rubycon capacitors out of a phat Xbox 360 with a Zephyr motherboard and noticed that all the Rubycon capacitors near the CPU were fake. The capacitors in question are Rubycon MFZ 680uf 6.3V and they all have a bullseye bottom, something not found in genuine Rubycon capacitors. None of them were leaking, they all have the K top, and the system has never been opened before. It appears Microsoft was using fake capacitors in the Xbox 360, or the Chinese facility where the console was manufactured in was using them and passing them off a genuine. Just thought I'd share...

I did it again – I had to fulfill my inner desire to fix yet another old piece of hardware. This one is actually kind of worthwhile, too – it’s an EVGA e-GeForce 7600 GS AGP video card, model P/N: 256-A8-N542-T2. With the popularity of “retro” PCs from the Win9x to XP era going up, and the diminishing supply of decent AGP cards, it is expected their prices will go up. Or is it? I bought the this video card rather on the cheap side (~$9 USD shipped to my door), because the eBay seller listed it for parts or repair (and correctly noted the bad capacitors.)

                                            So, here is the...

Normally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow. But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though. I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

This one should make @Pentium4 smile (if he is still reading BCN forums) – I got a new old stock / open box Casing Power MPT-301 PSU on eBay for $4 total.

Yes, it’s a very generic-looking box, but the manufacturer isn’t (at least not back in the days), which is…

                                            Macron Power Technology Co. LTD.

Let’s look at the PSU itself.

The shell/case also appears quite generic, like many “sold-with-the-PC-case” units. However, the shell is well-formed and has decent steel thickness. In terms of...
