    PWM VDD Voltage Question

    Hello,

A simply Question about SG6840 PWM Controller, must the VDD Voltage on Pin 7 measurable after PWM starts or also before and even if the PWM is defective ?
Its an external TFT SMPS with no power failure(no secondary output), i checked all the parts and replace some caps and also the MOSFET, but i cant find the failure, bridge rectifier and cap is working normal, on the middle Mosfet Pin is 320V, on the PWM Vin Pin is 5V, but on Pin 7 VDD i read only 1.7V, (with black probe on Hot Ground) should be about 16V ?, where comes the VDD Voltage normaly, from the bridge recifier, or only from the MOSFET after the PWM starts ?
Sorry if that is an stupid Questions, i´m not an expert in such things.
All smd resistors are ok, also the 10uF/50V Cap(replaced by new one), Z-Diode include.

    Thanks,
    Thomas

    Re: PWM VDD Voltage Question

Post a picture of the board in question. I have a feeling you may have a shorted diode in the prior part of the circuit. If you want to be sure, pull that chip and then check the Vdd pin for the voltage. If it's there, I'd change out that chip. If it's not, then the problem is before that.

Hm, a shorted diode, there are only 2 Diodes on the primary side, i´ve soldered out both and tested it for good.
I´ve read in the Data Sheet that the VDD comes from the transformers primary winding, maybe there is an interrupt there, i miss the Voltage on the diode that goes to the VDD.

Did you take the bridge rectifier out of circuit when you checked it? There isnt much before this PWM chip in this configuration. One diode in the rectifier could be bad making it half work without blowing the fuse.

Okay i´ve replaced the bridge rectifier with a new one, no effect.
What about the Varistor ?, i cant read any Ohms(solderd out) there shout be any reading in high Ohm range, or not ?, but also on 2M Ohm range o my Multimeter there shows nothing.

It was a really bad idea to solder out the PWM IC and turn on power, SMPS goes up in smoke ! RIP

Sounds like you found your problem. Smoke is good when you are looking for a defective component. Change it out, solder back in PWM and report back.

MOSFET? Is its voltage reading normal?
                by alro7779
                Hello, guys!
Got this 8-pin MOSFET (I presume) on the motherboard that I'm still trying to repair (HP Stream 11-ah117wm DAY0HGMB6C1 REV:C), close to the DC IN connector, and when I read voltage on Drain (5-8 pins) and Source (1-3 pins), I got the 19.81 VDC of the DC IN on each, but on the Gate (pin 4) it's 25 VDC. Is it normal? Now, I'm not quite sure the component is a MOSFET, but it looks like, and since it has the printed code on it totally unreadable, I can't try to find the datasheet. Can anyone give me a hand on this? Or maybe ff there's some MOSFET tutorial or something that you can...

MOSFET maintains voltage drop across G and S only for 3 seconds
                by digitalDNA
                Hello,

While trying to fix an SMPS, I hear a ticking sound.
I've checked all capacitors, but none seem to be shorted.

I then suspected an issue with the flyback transformer which has 3 leads on the primary (used in a push-pull configuration ?) and one of them, which is always connected to GND has a resistance reading in the order of Mega ohms with any of the other 2 leads on the primary.

But I thought let's check the MOSFETs first::

The circuit also contains a PFC circuit, controlled by a UCC3818D (D stands for the SMD version),...

VGA MOSfet permanently shorted and loss of MOSfet pad
                by Nooy
Hello everyone, I recently found this badcaps site and super Learn Electronics Repair youtube channel. And I wanted to learn how to troubleshoot power supplies and VGA cards and how to practice soldering, since I already have a properly defective piece of them. I am currently trying to solve two problems:

I have a Gigabyte GV-RX460WF2OC-4GD type card. I managed to find the faulty MOSfet (AON6414A) on it, which I replaced. The card starts up, but after about half a minute, the MOSfet in the same position will be shorted again. Is it possible that the PWM controller driving the MOSfet...

Hi Everyone, I am new to this forum. I have a Panasonic LED TV which doesnt turn on and is blinking 4 times repeatedly when I turn on the switch. The TV does not respond to the remote control so I had to turn on using the physical switch on the side of the TV. When I turn on the switch the 4 x blinking starts and repeat itself until I turn off the TV. There is a black screen. I turned off the light in the room to check the panel and I think there is no backlight as far as I can tell.

I have been inspecting and testing the capacitors and diodes in the power supply board to try to...
