MOSFET maintains voltage drop across G and S only for 3 seconds

    Hello,

While trying to fix an SMPS, I hear a ticking sound.
I've checked all capacitors, but none seem to be shorted.

I then suspected an issue with the flyback transformer which has 3 leads on the primary (used in a push-pull configuration ?) and one of them, which is always connected to GND has a resistance reading in the order of Mega ohms with any of the other 2 leads on the primary.

But I thought let's check the MOSFETs first::

The circuit also contains a PFC circuit, controlled by a UCC3818D (D stands for the SMD version), with no TI logo on it...

I removed the MOSFETs from the circuit and tested them one by one with a multimeter in diode mode.

After "charging" the gate with the red probe on G and the black probe on S, I moved the red multimeter probe to the Drain, D.
At that point, one of the MOSFETs maintains a voltage drop reading across D and S for only 3 seconds. Other MOSFETs maintain the voltage drop as long as the probes are still connected to the MOSFET's leads.

Is this a problem with the MOSFET ? Or is it completely normal ?
Do MOSFETs also produce a ticking sound when defective ?

    Thank you in advance,
    Roger

The MOSFETs are W25NM60N by ST Microelectronics.

Your multimeter likely only puts out 3V when you are "charging" the gate.
That mosfet needs 3-4V to start to turn on, so I say the mosfet is OK. It is just getting not enough charge to stay on very long. When a mosfet fails the gate or S-D typically short.
The clicking sound is from the magnetics (inductor or transformer) getting a current pulse.

Intel D865PERL - no Vcore after replacing MOSFETs and MOSFET drivers
        by kotel studios
        Hi,

Finally got time to fix this board up.
At first it didn't give any POST codes. Turns out it was an unsupported Celeron D cpu. After dropping in an Celery 2.6gHz the CPU came out of reset with clock signal, but still no post codes. For a while it did work when I applied pressure to the ADP3168 chip, but on next reboot the MOSFETs started to burn. Then I left it as is for months.

Now I came back prepared. Replaced the bad MOSFETs and the ADPxx18k drivers. Now I don't get any MOSFETs blowing up issues anymore. But sadly, the Vcore is missing. The whole VRM isn't...

How do you test MOSFET in laptops ?
        by Jane
I tried to use this method:

        Testing an N-channel MOSFET:

Step 1: Discharge the Gate (turn off the MOSFET)
Place the black probe (COM) on the Source (S) and the red probe on the Drain (D). The multimeter should show no continuity (high resistance or "OL" – open line).
Then, touch the black probe to the Source (S) and the red probe to the Gate (G). This discharges any stored charge in the Gate, turning the MOSFET off.

Step 2: Charge the Gate (turn on the MOSFET)
Now, place the red probe on the Gate (G) and the black probe on the

        Optiplex 3050 Vcore Mosfet short
        by pavithra_uk
        it is 3+2 vrm
vcore high side mosfet (AON6380) shorted when turned on instatly killed the processor (i5 7400)
gate drive chip (NCP81166) also gone.

any suggestions before replace mosfet and gate drive chip? what if I replace 3 high side mosfets with more current capable mosfets?

        odd question:
what if I put two silicone diodes series in forward way? assume each diode 0.7v drop and total of 1.4V. vcore not exceed this but can protect cpu from direct 12V hit from shorted mosfet ?...

Help identifying mosfet on Razer Blade RZ09 (CH570_MB_NT)
        by redbaron1007
I have a Razer laptop (RZ09 MB# CH570_MB_NT) that has a shorted mosfet marked BND M03 E067 that I'm unable to find anywhere online. Does anyone either know what the part number is for this mosfet or have a schematic I can find it in?

Backstory on the whole thing the laptop was plugged into a lamp at a hotel. The lamp got unplugged while it was charging and now the system won't power on anymore. I found the caps around this mosfet shorted and when I injected voltage into the caps the mosfet got hot and my bench psu was pulling 5A. Pretty sure this is all that's wrong with the laptop...

ASUS ROG Zephyrus GPU Mosfet repeat failure
        by MicroSMD Lab
The board number is GU502DU. I repaired this a couple weeks ago and it came back with the same issue, same mosfet failed (PQH9201). I'm hoping that the GPU was spared this time.
I used the same replacement part (purchased from Mouser) and I'm certain the soldering was done properly since it took just as much effort to remove as before. What could cause this same mosfet to fail? I'm thinking if it was unsuitable then the others would fail too. I looked for similar failures on YTube and the mosfet was replaced with AOE6930 in one instance and AOE6932 in the other but it's possible that the...
