    Capacitors for SMPS

The series capacitor Nichicon HZ , Rubyxon MCZ and Chemicon KZJ can also be used in switching power supplies?
Some series are specifically recommended for such, instead of used on motherboards.

    Re: Capacitors for SMPS

Depends on the power supply, but generally most computer power supplies (especially the older ones) are NOT designed for the ultra-low ESR caps you mentioned above. United Chemicon KZJ and KZG are also prone to failure.

For power supplies, it's better to stick to the specs of the original caps. Generally, though, United Chemicon KY and KZE, Panasonic FK and FM, Nichicon HE, and Rubycon ZL are all good choices for computer SMPSs. For slightly older PSUs, you can also use United Chemicon LXY and LXZ, Panasonic FC, Nichicon PM and PW, as well as Rubycon YXG.

The catalog of the Nichicon recommend for SMPS the series PJ, PS and TS.

Vintage AT Power Supplies - Selecting Capacitors
        by iMic
        Hi,

Back after a long hiatus with some old power supplies that need repairing. I've recently picked up a couple of 386SX systems, two 486DX systems, a SiliconGraphics Indy and an iMac G3 that either have verified leaking capacitors in their power supplies, or are likely to in the near future. For the sake of simplicity, instead of tackling all at once, I'm starting with the 386's and one of the 486's.

The 386's power supplies are Seasonic SS4040A's, with caps that are visibly leaking, and 9 replacement caps per unit are required. Most appear to be from the Rubycon...

After updating motherboard capacitors, what to do next (Asrock K7VT2, SOLTEK SL-75FRN2L)
        by dragon3x
Hi, I have some 32 bits computer motherboards that need repair, as they fail to
        power on.

        Here are some examples :

(N.B. "capacitors" indicated here are electrolytic capacitors located in the onboard
        switching supply area).
        (N.B. #2 : I could not find a 3300 microF aluminum-polymer with a higher voltage
        than 6.3 V.)

1 - Motherboard #1 : this is an Asrock K7VT2 (socket A) that still works well. To put it on test
        I replaced capacitors with aluminum-polymer.
        3300 microF/6.3 V. x 4 replaced by 3300 microF/6.3 V. (KYOCERA...

Capacitor Diarrhea - Nichicon PL Series
        by DrewPhillips
Hello All, I have on the bench a couple of PSU's which have some failed Nichicon PL series caps. They didn't "puke" their guts through the top, but instead "diarrhea'ed" corrosive brown electrolyte through the bottom, down the legs and onto the board. On one cap, the electrolyte rotted the cap right off the board leaving 2 little stubs, and also corroded a trace on the foil side.

The PSU's are Power-One MAP series and are ringing-choke topology. The semiconductors have date codes in 1993. The PSU's were used in a commercial application, fan-cooled. They had failed...

Samsung UN40H5003 boot loop every ~8 seconds
        by eigma
Hi, I rescued a Samsung UN40H5003AF (H = 2014 FHD) from the curb. Symptoms are: standby (red) light comes on, stays on for 8 seconds, flickers off, then comes back on, and the cycle continues.

        Service manual: https://www.electronica-pt.com/esque...is-u8la-71272/

SMPS board: checked voltages, all seem normal (A13V = 12.8V, UD = 3.3V, PWM_BLU = 0.77V, PS_OnOff = 5.5V). Remove 10p cable to main board -> backlight comes on. I think this means SMPS board and backlight are good.

        Main board: BN94-07592P / BN97-08922R...

Exactly same capacitors from NCC and Nichicon
        by xnRS
I was searching some caps and found NCC KY and Nichicon UHE. I was looking for 1000uf 10v 8 x 20 mm. If you'll look into data, you'll see that impedance at 20 and 10 degress celsious is same, same applies for the ripple current. Also, I saw same thing with some other big caps(680uf 400v, or something like that, don't remember exactly) and saw same thing from NCC and Nichicon, no other manufacturer. This leads me to one idea - they are using same factory and just rebranding some caps.

Any opinions on this one ?
