Re: Chip of the year 2008
These particular shunts are current sensing shunts, they are what allow the unit to have OCP and actually have two separate 12v rails.

I am not sure that I got the "YC?" brand correct. See the attached picture of the brand marking.

Re: Chip of the year 2008
This unit does actually have 2 12v rails. It might be sensitive to having no load on 1 12v rail and even a light load on the other 12v. Also check the 5v and 3.3v and make sure they aren't getting up there too high due to a crossloading situation, especially when you have almost no load on them.

stick it in your pc to find out for sure!

Re: Chip of the year 2008
Strange power supply. When I use one CD ROM as a load, the power supply works just fine. When I add one HDD as load, the lights on my tester just flicker, and the fan just does one quick spin.
Thought it might just be leaky main switchers, so replaced the D209L transistors with Fairchild 13009. Same results.
So I did a full recap. Same results.
I removed the output diode heat sink and diodes. All diodes measure OK. No shorts or leakers.
Looks like now I am going to have to get into some serious troubleshooting....and draw a schematic of that 2008Z chip.

Re: Chip of the year 2008
Solytech sl-8460BTX. I had a very similar solytech built rosewill sl-8500BTX that used the same infineon chip to generate the 5vsb. It also had OCP, I believe the 2008Z supports OCP, there should be shunts around the 12v leads that would indicate OCP.
See the attached picture. I believe those are shunts.Last edited by 370forlife; 10-04-2010, 06:14 AM.

Re: Chip of the year 2008
The 2003 and 2005 chips (probably the same) are both 16 pin chips. This new 2008 chip has 20 pins, so it is a completely different animal.
I have a schematic of the 2003 chip. It is both pwm and supervisor in one chip. I would expect the same in this 2008 chip plus some other functions.

By the way, if this does turn out to be a Solytech, check the resistance value of the loading resistors on the secondary side. Some of them are usually too low in resistance and they eventually cook the caps over time. See this thread:

It's another no name piece of Chinese crap.

Kind of like the custom Delta DNA1001 ICs on Xbox power supplies.Last edited by Krankshaft; 10-21-2010, 10:43 PM.

Re: Chip of the year 2008
I would not trust the caps. My Premier DR 400w had 2x330uF YC 200V caps but their true capacitance was only 220uF! As if it wasn't low enough...

i really like that sleeving used on the cables, many would probably say its ugly but i happen to find it quite stylish.

Chip of the year 2008
I have seen many LC/Allied/off brand "cheap" power supplies using the "chip of the year" 2003Z pwm/supervisory chip. Just got a MSI BTX 460 watt model MS-4460-010 power supply. Maybe 370forlife can tell me if it is a LC power supply. It seems to be an improvement in many areas:
Mains caps are 820 uF/200 volts (although a cheap brand, planet I think)
5vsb is NOT two transistor design but uses Infineon ICE3B0565 chip
Main switching transistors are two D209L
Main pwm/supervisory chip is the new "chip of the year" 2008Z (20 pin)
Two fans
Much better heat sinks
Has anyone seen tech data sheet or schematic of the 2008Z chip?
Still no APFC circuit, but I consider that a plus!Tags: None
