    ATX PSU voltages

    Hello guys,

I know that ATX PSU used to power desktop PCs have the following output voltages: 12V, 5V, 3.3V. I know that these voltages are generated only after PSU is powered ON. When PSU/PC is off, there should be only 5V sb (standby) output that powers the mainboard and certain peripherals. When power switch is pressed, pins 16 (green PwrOn) is shorted to pin17 (ground) and all above mentioned voltages are created. When power button is released, psu remain working. What is the voltage on this green PwrOn line?
I know that in laptops, it is 3.3V present on the power switch and this voltage is shorted to ground when power button is pressed.

What happens with ATX switching PSU?

During troubleshoot of one Faulty PSU today, I noticed that if pins 16 and 17are shorted, i.e. psu is jumpstarted it starts working but only until short between 16 and 17 exists. If this short is removed, PSU immediately turns off.
I‘m not sure if this is a correct behavior or not.
Can soneone clarify this start process in more details?

    Thank you.

    Re: ATX PSU voltages

Yes, everything is correct, this is how the power supply should work, it’s just that on the motherboard this PS-ON pin is controlled by a key (NPN transistor), when power is supplied from the controller to the base of this transistor, it opens the collector-emitter (GND) junction and this pin PS-ON switches to ground and the power supply starts up.

Hi lotas and thank you for the reply.
So, when I use digital multimeter, I won't measure voltage on Pwr_On pin on the ATX 24 pin connector?

I have also one more question. When power switch is pressed and released, shorting pins16 and 17 exists for only about 1 sec or so, but PSU continues to work after that.
When I jumpstarted PSU by using paper clip, it worked only while there was short on pins 16 and 17.

      Why is that?

The motherboard has circuitry to connect the two pins for as long as you need the computer on... That circuit requires power, hence the purple +5VSB power going to the board.

I don't know what PSU you have so I'm just using a Weltrend WT7517 supervisor IC here as an example, it is a common chip used in ATX power supplies.
As you can see the green PS_ON wire is pulled up to 5v by the 5VSB power supply in the ATX power supply.
Then when it is brought low (below 0.8v) the power supply will start up.
This is then held low by the PC motherboard as eccerr0r explained by a transistor.
And when the motherboard wants to turn off the power supply it releases the signal to this transistor.

              Hello:

I have both these laptops that appeared to have the same fault so I thought I would have a go at replacing the PCH as something to learn, they both are using the same PCH.

              I started on the ACER:

Up on connecting power no signs of life but current is consumed from the bench power supply and the PCH is hot.
All the caps on the top of the PCH are showing 0 ohms and the 3.3v rail is shorted.

I followed the videos from Sorin, Electronics Repair School on Youtube heating from the bottom to install. I practised on around 10 scrap...

Powersupply has all the voltages - Monitor still no power
              by Capacitorial
              Hello guys,

I have a Philips 240B7QPJEB. The monitor seems completely dead.
I opened it and measured the voltages of the powersupply. I found that a mosfet was dead and replaced it.
On the connector, that goes to the TCON board, all voltages 15-19V and 5V are present.
The small connector on the left of the PSU has two cables with 18V and all the other have 0.2V. It connects on this small connector on the left ontop of the panel. I guess the backlight? Seens fine I guess.
The weird thing is, that the Power LED is powered over the TCON board.
              On The TCON...

              Panasonic TC-P50S1 shorted TXNSC1EDUU (TNPA4782AB) SC Board

Hi every one. I just want to share the successful repair of my shorted Panasonic TNPA4782AB SC board.

I don't usually do it but so many parts were shorted that I decided to buy the ShopJimmy repair kit instead of sourcing each components individually. Here is the list of components the kit contained, with a remark indicating if I needed that part or not :

              D608, good
              D618 RF101L4S, good (See warning 1 below)

Dead Razer Blade 14 2022, shorted CPU?
              by BalkanBoy
              Hi,

              today I got Razer Blade 14, Ryzen 9 6900HX and RTX 3070Ti.

Laptop was completely dead. I found shorted CPU VRM mosfet, shorted 19V mosfet and blown battery fuse.

I replaced it all, but still on CPU coil where mosfet was shorted I got very low resistance, near 0 ohms. On other CPU coils I got around 3 ohms.

Laptop now raises voltage on whole board, but still nothing comes on the screen. CPU gets 0.7V on all coils except the shorted one. CPU gets only slightly hot, below 40 C.

I removed coil and injected 0.7V, it draw around...

              Hi, Would appreciate some help.
I have an Apple Late 2013 15" A1398 MacBook Pro with Logic Board 820-3662.
Get charger light but no fan spin or chime. No liquid damage.
Found PPBUS and VCORE both shorted to ground. Other rails were ok.
Removed VCORE MOSFETS U7310, U7320 and U7330. Found U7330 was in fact shorted.
With the 3 MOSFETS removed, get PPBUS and fan spin. VCORE is still hard shorted to ground (0 ohms).
Attempted voltage insertion on VCORE to locate short using bench supply set at 1.0 VDC and 4.95 Amps (max current for my...
